SOLD —— The Tribune, 1943-1944 || Lot of Wartime Issues on the Philippines during the Japanese Occupation

by Taliba, La Vanguardia, Tribune Corporation (c.1925-1942?)
Manila: The Tribune, c. 1943-1944

A lot of nine original early to mid-twentieth-century newspaper issues of the Philippine wartime publication, The Tribune. The Tribune had turned into a tool of Japanese propaganda in the last three years of the Japanese Occupation. The Japanese used the Manila newspaper to spread fake news. It severed ties with foreign media outlets and controlled the transmission and dissemination of all information. Despite Japanese control over the Tribune, many Filipinos were able to see beyond the propaganda and discern the truth during the Japanese Occupation.

VERY RARE. An assorted lot of newspapers printed with a brass typesetter. Well-preserved and in seldom good condition.

SOLD at ₱1,500.00 for the lot.

FOR SALE —— LOT of 2 VERY RARE VOLUMES OF ABRÉGÉ DE L’HISTOIRE DES VOYAGES || RARE BOOKS ON EUROPEAN EXPEDITIONS TO CHINA, INDIA & EAST INDIES(1780)

Two exceedingly rare original eighteenth century volumes of Abrégé de l'Histoire Générale des Voyages. Jean-François de La Harpe who wrote the books had them printed in Hòtel de Thou in Paris, France in 1780 (some 250 years ago).

The l'Histoire Générale des Voyages was a French attempt between exploration chronicles and civilian travelogues that arose during the Age of Enlightenment. The grand success of La Harpe was deemed significant in setting the stage for French expansionism and its impact on the commercial network throughout the world.

In this scarce fourth volume, the work is focused on the history of the Maldives, Sri Lanka, the East Indies formed by East Timor, Indonesia (Sumatra, Java, Batavia, Borneo, the Moluccas) and the Philippines. Voyages of Ferdinand Magellan, Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, Ruy Luis de Villalobos and other European expeditions are discussed. The work also includes more than five charming scenic engravings and one fold-out map on the Philippines of the first half of Jacques-Nicolas Bellin's rendition of the Murillo Velarde map of Luzon, first published in 1752 by Prevost d'Exiles.

The scarce fifth volume features the history of India, Sri Lanka, and Mongolia. Voyages of Fernão Mendes Pinto, Guillaume Bontekoé, and other European expeditions are also described in the work. The book also includes five charming scenic engravings on Hindustan; one fold-out engraving on the Mongol court; and two fold-out maps: one of the interesting regions of Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tibet, and India; and another set on the face of South India and Sri Lanka.

The books come in firm calfskin binding, stamped in gilt with gold leaf, and appear in strong, legible print. Frayed covers and marbled endpapers. Rubbings and creasing along the spine and margins. Minor staining and soiling.

FOR SALE: l'Archipel de St. Lazare ou les Marianes by Jacques Nicolas Bellin || antique map of the Marianas (1752)

An original mid-eighteenth century copper engraving of the Marianas as explored by a Jesuit mission in 1668 composed of Spanish and Filipino pioneers. The expedition sailed from the Philippines to the Ladrones (now Guam) led by Fr. Diego Luis de San Vitores, accompanied by a Bisayan aide and companion, Pedro Calungsod.

San Vitores gave the Chamorro archipelago the name 'Islas Marianas' in honor of Spain's Queen Regent Maria Ana of Austria and the Blessed Virgin Mary. San Vitores' entourage built a church and some small schools which helped evangelize the Chamorro people.

In April 1672, San Vitores baptized a newborn infant without the consent of a Chamorro chieftain named Mata'pang. This angered Mata'pang and led to the ex*****on of San Vitores and Calungsod, where their bodies were disposed of near the coast of Tumon, Guam. San Vitores' death triggered the Spanish-Chamorro Wars that lasted for some seventy years.

RARE. Unmounted, and unframed. This copper engraving is well-preserved and in incredibly good condition.
