The BookStop started from the idea of five college instructors to provide their students with good books to read and to promote the culture of reading in their school. Because their city didn’t have any bookstore yet, they thought of selling their own books by posting them on Facebook. To their s
urprise, booklovers from all over the city flooded their inbox and posts with orders. As this demand grew and their handful collection starting running out, they resorted to order more good books from other booksellers here and even abroad. This initial success may be attributed to two things—two principles which we continue to live by until now. Not all books are created equal. Not all books are good. Hence, at The BookStop we handpick the books we sell. We choose only the best for our dear readers. This assures them of buying not only the greatest reads from every genre (classics, suspense/thriller, self-help, etc.) but also, and more importantly, of not wasting their time or polluting their minds with bad or poor-quality literature. Having the regular student in mind—the college booklover who barely has the spare money to buy snacks, let alone a book!—and given the condition of our books (i.e. pre-loved), we sell our books at a significantly lower price compared to leading commercial bookstores. Faithful to the reason why The BookStop was created, our mission remains: to promote the passion of reading good books. By “good” books we mean literature that can help improve one’s self and society and can make life more meaningful. On the other hand, as a business, we aim to become the preferred used bookstore both online and in Maasin City. We plan to put up a one-stop bookshop—a “book-stop”—for bookworms, one where they can buy books, read, have coffee, gather and talk about everything under the sun (books, ideas, experiences, etc.). Today, The BookStop has served not only local customers but also booklovers from all over the Philippines. Our books have reached different parts of the country already, including Manila, Cebu, Bohol, Davao, etc.—a clear sign that more and more Filipinos want to read good literature.
