China’s largest comic convention, COMICUP, has effectively banned anime and manga cosplay from its upcoming event after announcing a sudden switch to a “New Chinese Style only” format.

The change was revealed on December 19, just days before the convention takes place on December 27 to 28 in Hangzhou.

Under the new rules, exhibits and cosplay that do not fit the Chinese-only theme may be removed. While organizers say exhibitors must judge compliance themselves, reports suggest stricter checks on site, including denying entry to cosplayers dressed as non-Chinese characters.

The decision has already led to major cancellations, concerns over low attendance, and could result in a large drop in tourism tied to the event.
