Outside:
In anticipation of Halloween, Netflix released Outside, a zombie apocalypse film set in the rural Philippines. The story follows Francis, who takes his family to his old family home to escape the chaos of a zombie outbreak in the city. But their troubles don't end there—while facing the undead, the family also confronts dark secrets and horrors buried within the house's past.
The cast delivers solid performances, and credit is due for their portrayal of the intense emotions and family dynamics in the midst of a terrifying situation.
However, the film falls short in several key areas. The lack of context around the outbreak is a major issue—there’s no explanation of how the virus spread, how the family made their escape from the city, or any theories about the origins of the zombie pandemic. Instead, the movie focuses heavily on family drama, but it’s not enough to keep the tension high. There are long, dull stretches that detract from the horror atmosphere, making it easy to forget you’re watching a zombie film.
Overall, Outside misses numerous storytelling opportunities, leaving much of the potential on the table. If you're looking for a tightly plotted and gripping horror film, this one may leave you wanting more.
