Proud. Happy. But also… a little heavy.

Seeing fellow social workers I supported—sharing notes, experiences, and insights from different DSWD regions—now getting hired after their IQT and technical exams is something I truly celebrate. You all deserve it. 🤍

At the same time, I can’t deny the quiet thought: “What if I had fully shown up too?”
I had the chance, but due to other commitments, I wasn’t able to complete the process.

And that feeling? It’s real.
But so is this truth: our timelines are different—and that’s okay.

To my fellow social workers, especially those feeling down or left behind:
Let’s continue lifting each other up. Share opportunities. Share information. Share encouragement.

Just to share an honest reality—especially for fresh graduates or those trying to break into the field:

There’s a common advice we often hear: “Try applying in NGOs or private organizations to gain experience.” While this sounds practical, the truth on the ground is far more challenging.

From what I’ve observed and personally experienced, applying to NGOs or private agencies is not as easy as it seems. In fact, many of these organizations require at least 3–5 years of relevant work experience. They are often looking for applicants who can immediately deliver, handle complex programs, and manage responsibilities with minimal supervision.

This makes it difficult for beginners who are genuinely seeking opportunities to gain that very experience.

Even volunteering—whether in NGOs or local government offices—is not always readily accessible. Opportunities may be limited, competitive, or require connections and prior exposure. And while honorarium-based roles exist, they are not always sustainable for those who also need financial stability.

In some cases, the standards and qualifications in NGOs and private agencies can even be more demanding than those in government positions. This is something many people don’t realize until they actually go through the application process.

This is not to discourage anyone, but rather to set realistic expectations:
✔ Gaining experience takes time and persistence
✔ Entry points are not always clear or easy
✔ Rejections are part of the journey

If you’re starting from zero, don’t feel disheartened. Instead:
– Keep building your skills
– Take small opportunities when they come
– Strengthen your credentials step by step
– And most importantly, stay patient with your progress

Sometimes, the path is not as straightforward as we hope—but every effort you make still counts.

This is the reality for many of us, and it’s okay to acknowledge that. 🤍

1,000 Hours, Still Not Enough: The Struggle of an Unemployed RSW”

We all know that the Social Work profession demands one of the longest internship requirements among degree programs—1,000 hours of On-the-Job Training, divided between office and field exposure.

During this time, we don’t just observe—we practice. We conduct case management, facilitate group work, and engage in community organizing. We spend full 8-hour days in assigned agencies, handle real clients, and complete extensive documentation as part of our responsibilities. This is where we apply the theories we learned in the classroom into real-life situations.

Yes, OJT is meant to prepare us—but why does it feel like it doesn’t count?

As recent board passers and now Registered Social Workers (RSW), many of us face the same reality: we cannot use our 1,000 hours of internship as “work experience” when applying for jobs. Most positions require at least one year of experience—but how can we gain that experience if we are not given the opportunity to begin?

For months, we submit applications, attend initial qualifying tests, and wait for results that never come. Others receive regret letters simply because they lack the required experience—despite already being exposed to actual fieldwork during internship.

We passed the board exam believing it would open doors. Instead, many of us remain unemployed—not because we are unqualified, but because the system does not recognize the depth of our training.

We are not asking for shortcuts.

We are asking for a chance.

A chance to prove that we are capable.
A chance to grow within the profession.
A chance to serve.

We are ready to learn, to be trained, and to contribute our skills to the welfare of society. We hope that agencies will begin to see internship not just as a requirement—but as meaningful preparation for real work.

We are looking for passionate and committed youth who are interested in:

📌 Who can join?
Youth from Marawi City (18-30) and nearby communities who are willing to collaborate, learn, and contribute to meaningful initiatives.

📌 What will happen first?
We will begin by forming a core group of 5–10 members or more who will participate in our first Getting-to-Know Session where members can introduce themselves, share ideas, and build teamwork.
