Is it important to maintain you gears and axles?
Yes, it’s important — especially for RC rigs that actually see trails, mud, water, sand, and hard crawling.
You can technically run the drivetrain until something dies and then replace it. But the problem is one neglected part can kill several other parts with it.
Think of it this way:
Maintenance is cheaper than replacement.
Your drivetrain is constantly dealing with friction and load: gears, bearings, driveshafts, transmission, differentials, portals, axles. Grease eventually gets dirty or dries out. Bearings can seize. Water can cause rust. Sand and dirt become abrasive.
Then something small happens:
Dry bearing → bearing locks → motor works harder → gears take more stress → gear strips.
Or:
Dirty differential → increased friction → heat → worn gears → damaged diff.
So instead of replacing a ₱100–₱300 bearing or simply adding fresh grease, suddenly you’re replacing a gear set, transmission, axle parts—or worse, electronics that were working overtime.
For our type of RC crawling, I’d say maintenance becomes even more important after water crossings, mud, beach/sand driving, or really dusty trails. You don’t necessarily need to tear the entire rig apart after every run. Clean it, inspect it, listen for weird noises, check bearings and driveshafts, and periodically open the gears/diffs and regrease them.
And there’s another reason: a well-maintained drivetrain performs better. It rolls smoother, has less resistance, gives you better low-speed control, makes less noise, and puts less strain on your motor and ESC.
So could we just say:
“Let it die. We’ll replace it.”
Sure. 😂
But you may end up replacing a lot more than the part you neglected.
