New study finds psychedelic drugs result in lasting increases in nature relatedness

New research provides evidence that psychedelic drugs produce enduring increases in people’s sense of being connected to nature. The findings, which have recently been published in International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, indicate there is a causal link between psychedelic use and nature relatedness.
A lead author of the study, Sam Gandy (), a collaborator with the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London, told PsyPost he has a lifelong love of nature and PhD in ecological science from the University of Aberdeen.
β€œI have a growing interest in how and why people become connected to nature, and the implications of this. Profound experiences of nature connection appear to be a common if not fundamental property of psychedelics, and it was interesting to examine,” he explained.

Mental Health Benefits from One Dose of Psychedelic Drug Last for Years in People with Cancer

Following up on their landmark 2016 study, researchers at NYU Grossman School of Medicine found that a one-time, single-dose treatment of psilocybin, a compound found in psychedelic mushrooms, combined with psychotherapy, appears to be associated with significant improvements in emotional and existential distress in people with cancer. These effects persisted nearly five years after the drug was administered.
In the original study, published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, psilocybin produced immediate, substantial, and sustained improvements in anxiety and depression and led to decreases in cancer-related demoralization and hopelessness, improved spiritual wellbeing, and increased quality of life. At the final 6.5-month follow-up assessment, psilocybin was associated with enduring antianxiety and antidepressant effects.

Approximately 60 to 80 percent of participants continued with clinically significant reductions in depression or anxiety, sustained benefits in existential distress and quality of life, and improved attitudes toward death.
