Queens and Bodies
/tw: r**e/
The female body is not inherently sexual. It's just a body, until given context.
I took great inspiration from "Walang R**e sa Bontok", a documentary that opened conversations about a society with no concept of r**e. It is a community where women can walk around with no clothes covering their breasts and still be highly regarded with respect.
Queen of Philippines (Mussaenda philippica) was included in the artwork since it seems fitting for the Bontoc people's treatment of women. It was said that during tribal wars, a woman would lift up her skirt and effectively ward off attacking warriors. This was to them, cosidered a bad omen - which contradicts the belief that r**e happens in times of conflict.
In a society where assault against women pervade every corner, it's hard to imagine one without. We CAN collectively overthrow the system. For a start, it's as simple as showing women the respect they deserve. Should be pretty easy without fragile masculine egos getting in the way?
This piece is for sale and is currently on display with other amazing artworks at SM Baguio, lower basement. Make sure to check the exhibit out if you can!
