According to an observational study out of Europe, people who ate citrus fruit “almost daily” had an incredible 50% reduction for developing pancreatic . A typical serving is about 120 grams of fresh fruit and in Europe would mostly consist of oranges and grapefruit. However, lime may be especially worthy to include in your regular diet. That’s because researchers in a separate study found juice to be highly toxic to pancreatic cancer cells in a test tube, suppressing their growth by up to 89%. The juice was rich in flavonoids typically found in fruit such as hesperidin, neohesperidin and rutin, as well as limonin—all of which have shown anticancer activity in other studies.

Only one bromeliad, the pineapple (Ananas comosus), is a commercially important food crop. Many other bromeliads are popular ornamental plants, grown as both garden and houseplants.

Could Pineapple Help Fight Breast Cancer? This sweet, golden fruit is a uniquely rich source of the natural enzyme bromelain, which is used to aid protein digestion. But bromelain may also severely disrupt cancer cells by destroying key signalling and activator proteins. The effect is so powerful that bromelain killed up to 95% of human breast cancer cells in a test tube. We don’t know yet if may reduce breast cancer risk in humans, but bromelain has already been used in clinical trials for patients. In one, it boosted some of the patients’ immune cells, and in another trial when used with other compounds (including papain) helped to decreased side effects of hormone therapy (dosage: 3000 FIP units daily).

Melons are powerful foods. When researchers analyzed orange melon (a cross between cantaloupe and honeydew) they found over 37 bioactive natural compounds including potent antioxidants like gallic acid and the flavonoid rutin. Extracts from this remarkable fruit were so toxic to human prostate cancer cells in a test tube, they killed off up to 64% of them. So it’s not surprising that an observational study from India found that men who ate (of any type) regularly had 52% less risk of . One cup (154 grams) of orange melon is a great source of beta-carotene, vitamin C and potassium—all for just 60 calories!

Red cabbage may be two superfoods in one. It has all the cancer-fighting indole-carbinol and isothiocyanates of green cabbage, but it also has an incredible 470% more antioxidants thanks to its red coloring. Red gets it color from the same compounds—anthocyanins—that make blueberries blue, and it has 29% more! Besides being powerful , anthocyanins are also potent cancer fighters. Recent meta-analyses have shown that people eating diets rich in anthocyanin had 22% lower risk of colorectal and significantly lower risk of death by heart disease. So the next time you’re at the grocery store, why not opt for red cabbage rather than green?
