Ecko started in 2018.
We had an empty building next door to our Hammer Hardware store, and I decided to move the gift range we had at Hammer and turn it into a beautiful standalone space our community could enjoy.

We filled the windows with beautiful displays and the store with lots of nice-to-haves alongside essential products. Over the years, times certainly changed — different coloured walls, different stock, and plenty of big ideas along the way.

Some highlights for me were our pop-up store out at Māhia over the Christmas break one year, and also seeing the resilience of Ecko after the devastation Cyclone Gabrielle brought. The store was flooded and stock had to be written off. We very quickly decided to strip the whole store, repaint it top to bottom and modernise the entire space. Thanks to the incredible effort of my team at Ecko & Hammer, and the support of my family, we pulled it off and were back up and running just one month later.

Retail is tough everywhere, especially for small businesses competing against big box stores and overseas retailers that don’t contribute to our government through taxes like we have to. The Kiwi dream is getting harder and harder to achieve. I don’t know how small towns will look in the future.

But what I do know is how grateful I am for the support of our community over the years. Thank you for walking through our doors, supporting local, and being part of the Ecko story. It has truly meant more than you know.
