Add some emphasis to the subject.
How did I do it?

Here is a photo I took of an 80mm Spheralens Crystal Ball at the beach in Whitianga on a rather dull day.
Photo taken with Nikon D7100 1/320 sec, f9, 45mm, ISO 100, Spheralens 80, ceramic hand stand.
Steps to obtain the final image.
1. Selected the inside of the ball with a circle tool in Paintshop Pro with a 5 pixel edge feather.
2. Rotated the selection 180 degrees.
3. Inverted the selection so the background was selected
4. Applied a mild sepia tone to the background, leaving the inside of the ball in colour for impact.
5. Cropped to lose a bit of the sky to further emphasise the main subject.
6. Added a signature
7. Save

The image in my Spheralens crystal ball is upside down? How do I rotate it?
Ahh, there's the trick.

The image is always inverted when you shoot a photo through, every time.

You need to flip it using photoshop, or gimp, or any photo software. I use Paintshop pro.

I usually use the selection tool, change it to a circle with a slightly feathered edge of about 5-10 pixels, select the inside of the ball, copy, paste to a new image, rotate 180 degrees, select and paste back to original pic.
Or, you can simply save another copy of the original, rotate 180 1 of the copies, use a clone tool to paint from one image to the other.

When taking a photo, I always try to focus on the image inside the ball or the edge of the ball as it looks best when the side of the ball is in focus.
Generally you want to be as far away from the ball as possible while still having the ball in the frame at a decent size. Being further away helps with focus and stability.
Bigger balls make it easier to move further away and still retain a good size in the pic.

You can also try cropping to around the ball, and inverting the complete image, or, like these ones attached it doesn't matter what way up they are if you have the right subject.

Hope that helps :)
