Location of the Week 📍

Tamaki Steps, Tahunanui

On our quest for bulletproof knees, Jo and I have been cutting laps of the iconic Tamaki Steps. This may sound like the worst kind of torture, but with views like these the burning quads and calves just fade away (...kind of). We’re certainly not the first loonies to have this idea – local firefighters have been using these 365 steps to train in full kit for the Sky Tower Challenge for yonks!

Distance: 365 steps
Elevation: +60m -60m one lap

With winter upon us, it’s easy to while-away the chilly mornings and evenings under a blanket with your fav show. But if you’re determined to maintain your hard-earned summer tramping fitness and be raring to go for spring missions, you’ll see huge gains by hitting these steps just once a week.

If, like us, you’re strengthening creaky knees for big mountain descents, try stepping down heel-first – slow and controlled is the key for eccentric loading. On the ascent, stay upright and focus on driving with the glutes rather than with the quads. Your tiny (but very important!) stabilisers will be working overtime, and your ankles, knees and hips will be praising your hard work on your next tramp!

Getting there is easy peasy – maybe it’s even on your commute! Depending where you live, you might start at the bottom of the steps on Tamaki Street, or at the top of the steps on Princes Drive. If you’re keen for some extra vert, park on Tahunanui Drive near the Tuscany Gardens Motor Lodge – there is a small walkway across the road with a sign for the steps.

We hope you have fun with this one! See you out there 😀

Location of the Week 📍

West Sabine Hut, Nelson Lakes National Park

Just a short jaunt to the iconic Blue Lake/Rotomairewhenua, West Sabine Hut is a large 30-bunker located on the roaring Sabine River. It’s the perfect layout to chitchat with your fellow trampers, play a game of cards and warm up around the central woodburner. It can be quite a busy hut, so if solitude is your goal you’re best to camp further upstream!

Distance: 15.5km
Elevation: +361m -142m

Catch the water taxi from the Lake Rotoroa jetty ($65pp) and begin your walk at Sabine Hut. The single track terrain is ever-changing native bush, rooty scrambles, flat meadows and minor stream crossings – all with glorious views of the crystal clear river and peaks beyond. This section can take anywhere from 4-7 hours depending
on your speed and comfort on technical terrain. Once you reach the swing bridge,
you’re done for the day!

The hut is $25 a night, and I’d highly recommend booking ahead – especially during the busy summer TA season (or just avoid altogether and go in the quiet of winter!).

There is a large enclosed porch for muddy/smelly gear, 2 drop toilets and sinks with
running water inside. The river is just a few metres from the hut, and ideal for a rinse
off at the end of the day if you’re game!

From the hut there is plenty to explore. On to Blue Lake and the alpine Lake Constance, further afield to Waiau Pass (1870m), up and over the insanely gorgeous Moss Pass (1785m), or the full Travers-Sabine Circuit.

If it’s been on your list for a while, now is the perfect time to book your bunk!

Location of the Week 📍

Lost Stream Bivouac, Leatham Conservation Area

There’s something so romantic about a wee 2 bunk bivvy tucked away in the mountains. These tiny backcountry shelters are most often used by hunters, but if you’re an intrepid tramper that loves exploring off the beaten track – put this trip on your list! And better yet, this one’s dog friendly.

Distance: 7hr / 14km one way
Elevation: +895m -363

Lost Stream Bivvy is a straightforward tramp from Griegs Hut in the Leatham Conservation area (just one valley over from Rainbow). You can tramp, bike or 4WD up to Griegs (15km, +446m), then continue up the Branch River Track for another 7km to Siberia Hut.

From the hut, it is 100% worth crossing to the true right of the river. The route on the true left is covered in detritus and windfall – opt for the friendlier, faster route! However, keep an eye on your map and cross the river once again to head up Lost Stream Track to the north-west. It goes without saying that you’ll want the flow to be low! Steer clear after heavy rain.

Settle in for a slow traipse up this narrower valley; sidling high above the stream, deep in the forest with not much in the way of views, and climbing 600m over 7km. Though a real highlight is the plethora of stunning waterfalls along the way! The track flattens out towards the end and the wee bivouac is not too far away.

Now we get to the good stuff! If you’d like to extend your trip, the route from Lost Stream Biv to Top Misery Hut is STUNNING.

Please note: there is no marked track over the tops, so nav and backcountry skills are a must. The going is steep with a wee bit of scree (and snow this time of year), but the views are out of this world! Allocate about 5-7 hours for this section.

The track from Top Misery to Bottom Misery Hut will be a relief: 2-2.5 hours of very cruisy walking. The track rejoins the Branch River, and it’s just 5km down the valley back to Siberia Hut.

Location of the week 📍

Pouakai Circuit, Te-Papa-Kura-o-Taranaki

One further afield this week but it’s such a gem, we just had to share these epic photos. If you haven’t hiked this loop or visited the Pouakai Hut, this needs to be on your bucket list. 🥰

Distance: 25km from Mt Egmont Car park (30km incl. Pouakai Peak)

Elevation: +1400m -1400m (+1800m incl Pouakai Peak)

With incredible views of Taranaki Maunga, the Pouakai Circuit is a spectacular unique loop that takes you through ancient volcanic landscape, alpine swamp and tussock.

This track starts at the North Taranaki Park Visitors Centre - definitely check in here as they have extensive weather forecasting info.

You head towards the majestic mountain through bush then out into the open where you sidle around the volcano (alpine gear needed for this section if there is snow in winter❄️).

What is so great about this tramp is walking up close and personal to him. This route takes you to Holly Hut, a great spot for lunch then carry on through the swamp and up to the Pouakai range where you get great views looking back of Taranaki. A cheeky side trip to the Pouakai Trig is definitely worth it for epic sea views and of the central plateau mountains.

🛖 A stay at the brand new Pouakai hut is a must if you want to check out the fanciest DOC hut around. Hello stained glass windows, solar power, charge points, insulation - this is like staying in a hotel, scroll through the pics. 😮

From here, you can get up to the Pouakai tarns (1km walk) for sunset and sunrise - if you are lucky you might get picture perfect conditions like this!

Then walk out back to the start at the North Taranaki visitors centre via new board walks and steps galore.

A great one day run in summer, or a perfect 2 day hike at Pouakai Hut, or take your time with an extra night at Holly Hut. 🤩
