Ever get confused between Cardinal Tetras, Neon Tetras, and Green Neon Tetras?

A quick way to tell them apart is by looking at the blue and red colouring on their bodies:

🔹 Green Neon Tetra – Blue stripe runs the full length of the body, red stripe starts around the middle of the body and extends to the tail.

🔹 Neon Tetra – Blue stripe runs almost the full length, stopping just short of the tail. Red colour starts around the middle of the body and extends to the tail.

🔹 Cardinal Tetra – Blue stripe run almost the entire length of the body stopping just before the tail. The red stripe covers chin to tail.

Green Neon = full blue
Neon = 50/50
Cardinal = full red

Happy Monday, everyone! We hope you had a great weekend.

We spent some time organizing and sorting through our plant collection in the past few days, and this week we're excited to bring you a selection of our home-grown plants, including:

The results are in for our APT balance experiment.

As we all know, fresh APT Feast aquasoil leaches a large amount of ammonia when first set up. Combined with the soft acidic water conditions created by the soil, this can make cycling difficult using typical cycling methods.

In our cycling tests last year, tanks using cycled filter media with APT Feast showed no measurable cycling activity during the initial two-week dark start period.

This year, we repeated the trial using APT Balance. Within the first two weeks, we were already seeing measurable increases in nitrite and nitrate — clear signs that the nitrogen cycle was actively developing even under low pH and low kH conditions.

By week six, the tank was fully cycled without any water changes.

Here's our recommendation for cycling aquariums with APT Feast substrate:
1. Perform 3x complete water change over 3 consecutives day after setting up to lower the initial ammonia load.
2. Add APT balance weekly
3. Check water parameters weekly until tank is cycled.

The three large water changes will reduce the initial ammonia load and fast track the cycling time to less than 6 weeks.

Note:
Many plants can tolerate low levels of ammonia (1ppm) in aquarium without adverse effects. It is safe to plant from day one with daily water change or once the ammonia level has been reduced to around 1ppm.

For those who wishes to add fish, we strongly recommend to wait until there are no measurable levels of ammonia and nitrite in the aquarium before adding the live stock.

Pink Flamingo and Hygrophila polysperma 'Rosanervig' are looking lovely in our little 14L tank. 🌱💕

One thing I've noticed with the Rosanervig is that it doesn't always show off those striking pink-white veins, even when it's getting CO₂, fertiliser, and plenty of WRGB lighting.

This tank is running aqua soil, and the veining seems much more pronounced than in my other setups. Maybe the substrate is the missing piece?

🤔 What's everyone else's experience with this plant? Have you found a particular combination of light, nutrients, substrate, or water parameters that really brings out the variegation?
