Hoki Hoko Thrifty Finds VINTAGE RETRO SHOP

Offering up timeless sustainable pieces for purchase. Keeping things out of our landfills. Kia ora and welcome to my page.

Firstly, what brought me to creating this page and why. The best place is always to ask "why"? As a young girl growing up in Tamaki Makaurau my grandmother (Nana) and my mother Robin (Robyn) use to take me to "Op Shops" and " Flea Markets". My earliest recollections were going to the Salvation Army Shop on Symonds Street, my Nana and I would catch the bus into town, Nana always on the lookout for

a bargain. My mother and Nana and sometimes Dad would wake me up in the wee small hours of the morning to head to the flea market that was held in the car park behind K Road (some of you may recall those times). When I say "wee small hours" it would be about 5.30am in the morning, I'd still be trying to wake up. I remember my Nana buying me this little black handbag, I remember it vividly, this was back in the 70s, so I'm guessing that little black bag would have had some age to her. I fell in love with that bag, hence still being able to recall it. This is probably another reason why I have an attraction towards handbags to this day. My Aunty Eva who lived in Dargaville (Takiwira) use to take me along to markets where she would have a stall. She would sell pot plants and nick naks she had, I'd find myself getting all excited at how people would purchase things off her and I'd be able to have a look around at all the other stall holders and what they were selling. During my lifetime I've always enjoyed getting something for a bargain. I've always loved popping into Op Shops, Garage Sales and Markets in the hope of finding something. Which brings me to the present day, creating a FB page, where I can share with you some "finds" and offer them up to you for sale. NOTE: The page is a work in progress at the moment, however I do hope to be uploading items for sale very soon. Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

Mōrena Team Hoki,

Welcome to Wednesday.

Firstly a reminder that we're closed tomorrow and Friday and we apologize for the inconvenience.

Joanne has 2 days of what one might call "professional development" 😆 which is basically me sitting down in front of my laptop and getting my ducks in a row, in preparation for the Summer.

A while back we visited "Venerable Vintage" in Ōamaru and they had the nicest collection of Temuka in their shop.

We thought you might appreciate a wee squiz ;)

Happy Wednesday everyone.

Mōrena Team Hoki,

Welcome to Tuesday.

Yes we're open today 😀

Who remembers when the veggie guys were in the shop?

Boy have things changed since their time.

I wanted to remind myself of what things looked like before we came in.

There was so much cleaning to be done prior to opening our doors for the first time.

We all need a reminder sometimes of how far we've come and what hard work looks like.

Happy Tuesday everyone.

Mōrena Team Hoki,

Welcome to Monday.

We're closed today, back in the shop tomorrow.

Unfortunately our week is a little all over the place with us being closed again this Thursday/Friday.

We apologize again for the inconvenience.

We farewelled one of the barometers the other day. A customer snuck in to grab for their husband for "Father's Day" 😆 🤣 😂

Happy Monday everyone.

Mōrena Team Hoki,

Welcome to Sunday.

Guess what? We're open today. If you're looking for something to today, come on down to the shop.

Who doesn't like a little "thrift" on a Sunday? I know I do ;)

As our schedule is a bit all over the place at the moment, we thought we'd open our doors today as a courtesy to our customers.

Happy Sunday everyone.

ATTN: Who remembers "Fishy" ;)

Mōrena Team Hoki,

Welcome to Saturday.

Yes, we're in the shop today ;)

For those that know me well, you'll recognize this piece of art that my beautiful cousin painted many years ago.

I'm thinking about letting it go to a new home. If you look at the bottom right corner you'll see a small tear which I never wanted repaired as nothing and no one in life is perfect aye 😆

Thank you to our customers for your understanding while the shop has been closed.

Next week is going to be a bit disruptive as well but more about that next week.

Happy Saturday everyone.

Mōrena Team Hoki,

Welcome to Friday.

We're closed today and here's my "why".............

Whānau(family)

My brother is in town for a few days, spending quality time with him means a lot to me, even if thats just sitting around talking and being in each other's company.

Although I did try to sell him something yesterday I failed miserably 😆

TIME is something that goes by so fast so hanging out with my whānau is a priority.

We'll be back in the shop tomorrow.

Happy Friday everyone.

Mōrena Team Hoki,

Welcome to a wishy washy Thursday.

We're closed today and possibly tomorrow.

Yesterday we removed these shelves and replaced them with something else.

This is all part of our Spring cleaning and getting a little more organized in the shop for when the town comes to life again.

Thank you to Bevan and our good friend Gordon for their man power, moving things for me.

Happy Thursday everyone.

Mōrena Team Hoki,

Welcome to Wednesday.

Firstly, don't forget we're closed tomorrow and possibly Friday.

Yesterday we started putting out more items in preparation for "father's day" next month.

Today I'll be sorting through stock and organizing the shelves.

On those quiet days in the shop is when we do all the little behind the scenes jobs that you don't get to see.

Happy Wednesday everyone.

Mōrena Team Hoki,

Welcome to Tuesday.

YES! Its Tuesday and the beginning of our week.

Yesterday's "throwback" post was a reminder to us just how much the shop has evolved since we opened back in March.

There's a lot to be said about being self employed and running a business.

The countless "unpaid" hours of behind the scenes hard work that goes on.

But the thing that drives us forward is the passion we have for our business, the ideas that go through your mind constantly 😆

So to all our small businesses working hard on their dream, this post is an acknowledgement of all our hard work :)

We're back in the shop today at 10am.

Happy Tuesday everyone.

Mōrena Team Hoki,

Welcome to Monday.

This morning I'm sharing a throwback to our humble beginnings back in February/March.

Moral of this story is "hard work pays off" but also a reminder of what the shop looked like before..............

Most people remember the veggie guys and Delwyn, Helen and Marybella prior to the veggie guys and the long line of businesses that have been in this shop.

For now, we're the custodians of this wee space and we're making the most of it ;)

Happy Monday everyone.
