Visiting my favourite CafƩ I was intrigued to see a container of bright and colourful Candy Floss on sale, which piqued my curiosity and resulted in me talking to the couple that own FON Candy Floss, a local business success story.
FON Candy Floss began with a simple idea, born from nostalgia, necessity, and a touch of stubbornness. Founders Greg and Roxanne missed the joy of a whimsical childhood treat: cotton candy. āOriginally, we didnāt set out to be Candy Floss makers. Our first venture was FON, which stood for Family of Nuts, a nut butter business we started after the local peanut butter supplier moved away leaving a void for the locals to get fresh peanut butter. We had zero small business experience, but we jumped in headfirst. Unfortunately, New Zealandās climate and limited access to peanuts during Covid meant that venture was not sustainable.ā

It all began with a need for something fun and kid-friendly to offer at a weekend farmersā market stall. Roxanne suggested candy floss and despite some initial hesitation ("it's sticky, it's messy..."), they decided to give it a go. The result? A complete sell-out in under an hour. That was the lightbulb moment. What began as an fun experiment for kids has grown into a sought-after people pleasing experience at weddings, brand activations, corporate events, school fundraisers, and more. Offering fully bespoke services, matching flavours and colours to themes, adorning candy floss with edible flowers or glitter, and even crafting layered candy floss cakes.
