How to make a book - a self-publishers guide

1. Write a lot.
2. Get it carefully Proof-Read by two different readers.
3. Correct all problems arising from the Proof-Read.
4. Decide the style of the book. Will it be: Saddlestiched, Perfect Bound, or Case Bound.
5. Choose your illustrations (make sure you have copyright permission to reproduce them), or employ an illustrator/photographer to create them, or create them yourself.
6. The cover should be treated as its own entity and be printed on heavier paper stock (4 pages).
7. Create a separate Title Page.
8. Non-Fiction books may include Index and Appendices pages.
9. A Table of Contents Page will be required.
10. Page numbering normally will start after the Contents Page.
11. Allow for a large enough font and line spacing. The older your audience, the larger the font needs to be. 11pt Clarendon on 14 points of lead would be highly legible for most people. Select an easy font to read. It's your choice and there are lots of options.
12. Don't mix font styles. Be consistent.
13. Maintain wide margins to the edge of the page.
14. If it's a Novel the type needs to be Justified left and right.
15. If it's a Poetry Book the type needs to be either Flush Left or Centred.
16. Poetry or Children's books can use larger a Point size and more Leading in the text.
17. Triple-check spelling, grammar, and page numbering after the book has been through the design stage.
18. A copyright statement needs to be written. Include in the statement the country of origin as New Zealand.
19. ISBN registration will need to be applied for.
20. A Barcode for the book needs to be generated.

With all of the above done, you are ready to publish.
