You are warmly invited to join us at Poppies on Friday 24 April at 5.30 pm to celebrate the launch of Peter Dornauf's latest book, Six Days.

Peter Dornauf's new novella is an updated book of Genesis in both its elicitation of pastoral beauty and its chronicle of human tragedy. Its title, Six Days, is a direct reference to the biblical account of creation and the Garden of Eden. The rural New Zealand setting evokes, in its description of lush paddocks, tall trees, orchard and hedges, a bucolic equivalent of arcadian paradise. The narrative, with its two main characters, Allan and Evelyn Thompson, sets up a mid-twentieth century version of things that contains echoes of the original drama, played out on a modest dairy farm in a small rural locale. Like the story of Adam and Eve, things begin well but they don't end well.

Peter Dornauf has taught and lectured in secondary and tertiary institutions for over 25 years. He is a prominent Waikato artist as well as a writer; author of four novels, four poetry collections and several non-fiction works that deal with matters to do with cultural, artistic and intellectual history.

Free event. Light refreshments will be provided. Please let us know if you're coming: [email protected]

Come along to the Rototuna Library at 6pm on Wednesday 11 March to hear Elisabeth Easther in conversation with her former Waikato Diocesan School for Girls teacher Jacqui Fitzgerald. They will be chatting about Elisabeth’s debut novel, Seed, and the writing process, and about friendship, fertility and family in the modern world.

There will be a Q&A session and an opportunity to have books signed. Poppies will be there with copies of Seed for sale.

Elisabeth Easther is an actor, journalist and award-winning playwright from right here in Kirikiriroa, Hamilton. Best known for playing the villainous Nurse Carla on Shortland Street, Elisabeth also hosted the top-rated remake of the 1960s television series Islands of the Gulf. A prolific book reviewer, Elisabeth has appeared on RNZ National, Cleo Magazine, TimeOut London, The NZ Herald and The NZ Listener. A book lover from way back, if reading were an Olympic sport, Elisabeth would be a contender to represent her country.

No registration required - this is a free event suitable for adults.

Signed copies of Ben Sedley’s book in store now.

This is an excellent resource for anyone who has struggled with low mood, worries, self doubts or mean thoughts about themselves and then found it difficult to move their life forward. Rather than struggling against internal pain, this book will help you to learn ways to carry the heavy stuff with you as you go where you want to go.

The year was 1986 - a time defined by Ghostbusters on VHS, the height of Jazzercise tights, and the only year that acclaimed Wellington poet and author Kate Camp kept a diary.

She toured the world with Cat Stevens, Neil Sedaka and Charles Aznavour. Suzanne Lynch started off as one half of the acclaimed singing duo The Chicks and became one of our most sought after international touring artists. She will share her life story and celebrate her memoir "Yesterday When I Was Young" with much loved broadcaster, writer and collaborator Karyn Hay this Sunday.
