GEORGE PSA: Due to a number of factors — Covid-19 among them — George has decided to stay in lockdown for, oh, ever. It’s been a blast! The people, the stories, and lots (and lots!) of lovely things. Thank you all. You’ve been the best! 😊❤️

We have two new cases of COVID-19 in Tairāwhiti.

One is a male in his 50s, the other is a woman in her 40s.
The two cases are unrelated to each other or last week’s repatriation flight.

The origin of the virus is known for the woman. We have already been in touch with her close contacts and they are self-isolating.

Public health will be investigating the man's contacts during incubation to identify the source of the virus. The man has been in self-isolation staying within his small bubble. He has had no close contacts outside of his bubble since lockdown.

He was swabbed at the War Memorial Theatre Assessment Centre late last week.
The man is in quarantine at home and is well.
Please respect these people’s privacy. Receiving a diagnosis like this is stressful for them and those in their bubble. Please take heed of the Prime Minister’s advice. Be kind, have kind thoughts, kia kaha.

461 Tairāwhiti people have been tested for COVID-19.

Nationally there are 17 new cases of COVID-19 since yesterday (8 confirmed and 9 probable). A total of 1366 New Zealanders have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and 628 have recovered. Our condolences to the whānau of the four people diagnosed with COVID-19 who passed away overnight.

RIP Denis 😕

It has been 50 years since Denis Irwin launched Matawhero Wines and while he no longer owns the label, he lives just up the way on Tiniroto Road. He’s at number 747, in fact, hence the name (747) on the label of his new wines. And 50 years be damned . . . tonight George caught up with Denis as he offered tastings at Liquorland. He’s a classic! https://www.therealreview.com/2015/07/25/gisborne-legend-launches-new-wine-label/

❌ Titirangi (Kaiti Hill) has been closed to prevent illegal rubbish dumping.
Since the lockdown has come into effect there have been numerous reports of household rubbish being dumped on the maunga.
Council chief executive Nedine Thatcher Swann says stopping vehicle access should stop it occurring.
“Vehicle travel over Titirangi is non-essential and people shouldn’t be driving up there in the first place. Our rubbish and recycling collections are still continuing so it is disappointing some people choose to do this,” she said.

“The whole country is in lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and dumping rubbish in public spaces goes completely against that. If anyone sees illegal dumping taking place, please let us know using the GDC Fixit app or by contacting customer service.”

People using tracks on the maunga are reminded to maintain social distancing and ensure they are 2 metres apart.

Check the Council website for constantly updated information on services and information https://www.gdc.govt.nz/council-facilities-and-services/ For government information go to www.covid19.govt.nz (external link).

Also in the news, Hauora Tairawhiti says that while there are no new cases of Covid-19 in the region, the one person already diagnosed here was yesterday admitted to Gisborne Hospital, where he is in complete isolation and staff caring for him are wearing full Personal Protective Equipment. He is in a stable condition so here’s hoping for a happy(ish) outcome. 🤞
