As we countdown to Marlborough Book Festival 2024 (our first session is tonight (sold out) and our official opening gala night is tomorrow evening!! (some tickets available)) we can't help but cast our minds back to our very first festival, 10 years ago in 2014, when six authors joined us at the Blenheim Club and at Cloudy Bay. The guest authors were Barb DeLeo, Elizabeth Knox, Fiona Kidman, Harry Broad, Karen Healey and Ron Crosby.

We’ve held the event annually, with the exception of 2020 due to Covid. With sustained support from our wonderful sponsors, a whole host of volunteers and interviewers, not to mention our amazing audiences, the festival has grown - but not too much! - and earned a reputation for wonderful Marlborough hospitality and a warm friendly festival vibe.

This is very much a community event with so many people helping to make it a success. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who has been involved over the past decade. We look forward to seeing old friends and making new ones over the weekend to come.

Nic Low, in conversation with Peter Meihana, spoke to a sold out audience today about his book Uprising- a book about mountaineering, NZ history, purakau Māori, geography, geology, Waitangi claims and according to Peter, a bit of romance! It took Nic 7 years of research, walking, writing, editing and rewriting to complete the book he initially thought would take 18 months.
Nic talked about the process of finding a balance between the contrasting worlds of his Māori and Pakeha whakapapa as he went on his journey following in the footsteps of his ancestors across the Southern Alps of Aotearoa using clues found in oral stories as a guide to his chosen route.

If you haven't got tickets to the Marlborough Book Festival yet, it's not too late!
