Plastic is one of our greatest environmental challenges.

Each year, every New Zealander on average sends nearly 60kg of plastic waste to landfills. Many plastic products are only used once, not properly disposed of, and end up littering our moana and whenua - which harms our wildlife, environment and climate.

Since banning single-use plastic bags in July 2019, we have been looking at what we have to do next to reduce the amount of plastic entering our environment.

From today (1 October 2022) we are banning the provision, selling or manufacturing of the following plastic products in Aotearoa New Zealand:

- Single-use plastic drink stirrers
- Single-use plastic cotton buds
- Plastics with pro-degradant additives
- Certain PVC food trays and containers
- Polystyrene takeaway food and beverage packaging
- Expanded polystyrene food and beverage packaging.
