Tulips sure have history…

Long before tulips became synonymous with the Netherlands, their story began with wild species growing across Central Asia.

Over centuries they were cultivated, prized and selected for their beauty, eventually making their way through the Ottoman world and into Europe where things got a little out of hand (as they tend to do)… ;)

By the 1630s, rare and unusual tulips had become so desirable in the Netherlands that they fuelled the extraordinary period we now call ‘Tulip Mania’

The mania didn’t create the tulips we grow today, but our fascination with unusual colours, shapes and forms certainly didn’t disappear with it. Centuries of cultivation, selection and hybridisation have given us the extraordinary diversity of tulips we know now.

And after all that history, travel, obsession and horticultural ingenuity…

…here they are growing in my little Auckland garden.

I think this is one of the reasons I keep growing flowers…

You start with something tiny, with no real idea of exactly what it will become.

So you plant it. You look after it. You wait.

And somewhere in all that waiting is HOPE and the belief that something beautiful is coming, even when you can’t see it yet.

Then one day, there it is.

A flower you imagined months ago, suddenly real and right in front of you.

And somehow the waiting makes the wonder even better. My smile says it’s all 😄

This amaryllis has popped up very early, but I’m not mad about it!

Hippeastrum ‘Akiko’ is a stunning double-flowering amaryllis cultivar featuring luxurious, antique-white petals with a soft lime-green center. It produces large, multi-petaled blooms on tall, sturdy stems, making it a popular choice for indoor pots and decorative floral displays.

They usually don’t flower until summer but this one was in a warm spot and I think the warm early summer months we had tricked it into flowering early.

Turns out, flowers really do bring people together.

When I started sharing this little patch of garden, I really just wanted to talk about flowers, growing things and why being outside amongst it all matters so much to me. And try and reach a few more customers!

Seems quite a few of you decided to come along too.
This isn’t really a post about a number. It’s just a thank you… for watching, commenting, sharing, asking questions, taking my advice (and occasionally correcting it), and for sharing it all with me.

There are lots more flowers to grow, things to learn and probably a few failures along the way.
