Building on our reverse engineering skills and our previous experience with a similar casting from 8 years ago, Skellerns has recently cast two additional 8-cylinder Bugatti Type 57 engine blocks. Our customer delivered us fully prepared hard sand moulds ready for us to pour clean molten cast iron into the moulds. The cooled castings were then fettled and machined to create a couple of “as new” engine blocks for this mighty Italian masterpiece.

More detailed information about the Bugatti’s restoration can be viewed at https://bugattiatlantic.co.nz/bugatti-type-57-engine/ https://oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/53938-bugatti-t5759-engine-project/

An innovative methodology was used by the Skellerns Palmerston North Foundry team to cast a new 950 kg Cast Iron bend with 760 mm (30 inch) inlet and outlet diameters. Casting such a large unit involved butterflying the operation of two furnaces in order to complete the 1,100 kg gross weight pour successfully in one continuous operation. The casting will eventually form part of Pumping Systems largest range of Flood Axial Flow Flood Pumping Systems https://macewans.co.nz/product/macewans-axial-flow-pump/.

Skellerns proudly supporting NZ power generation.
These large AB2 - Aluminium Bronze castings underwent stringent testing including, chemical analysis, mechanical tensile tests, proof machining, visual and ultrasonic NDT. All this before they could be shipped to our client who will weld them together ready for finish machining, and further testing. Ready for the truck to collect.
There were challenges involved, but we overcame them and we are proud of the result!

Skellerns were recently engaged by The Hauraki District Council to undertake the repairs to this fabulous statue in Waihi.
We manufactured new castings in silicone bronze to replace the broken and lost Taiaha and Patu.
Our team then travelled to Waihi to weld the new parts on, then undertake careful art finishing and patina work to make the new parts look like they were always there.
Another example of the specialised skill base within Skellerns Metal Castings.

McLaren Cars Ltd in Auckland provides full restoration and repair services for historic McLaren cars from the period 1967 to 1975 and serves to honour the legacy of Bruce McLaren, Denny Hulme and their colleagues during the glory days of car racing from that period.
Skellerns Metal Castings foundry in Auckland has now completed 3 cylinder block castings for McLaren Cars, and the proof machined blocks been despatched to McLaren Engines in Livonia, Detroit USA for final machining and set up by the same company that produced the original Can-Am racing car blocks for General Motors.

We are extremely proud that we are contributing an important, and very complex, component to these wonderful replica projects and continue the strong New Zealand connection with the Bruce McLaren legacy.
