A French couple visiting Tāmaki Makaurau had an unexpected setback this week when their bumbag, containing their passports and important travel documents was stolen from their campervan.

With flights home scheduled for this week, the couple were understandably worried.

They managed to capture a screenshot from CCTV at the carpark and headed to Newmarket Police Station to report the incident.

Local officers wasted no time and made their way to Greenlane West to search the area where a male matching the CCTV image was located in a nearby carpark.

When officers approached, he attempted to flee, but was quickly taken into custody.

The male admitted the theft and led Police to where he had dumped the bumbag. Thankfully, all the essential documents were recovered intact to the relief of the couple.

We are wishing the couple safe travels on their next adventure ✈️
