According to the New Zealand Medical Journal, it is reported that obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS) occurs in 4% of adult males and 2% of adult females.

Between 40 - 90% of people with OSAS are obese. Obesity increases the risk of OSAS because excess fat tissue around the neck exerts pressure on the upper airways, increasing the likelihood of upper airway collapse during sleep.
