Home Ownership Pathway The vision behind HOP 🏔️💼HOP Cafe

Andrew Lavulavu started Home Ownership Pathway (HOP) to build real, repeatable frameworks for first-home buyers navigating an incredibly complex process. With over 10 years of hands-on experience and thousands of families impacted, he poured everything into creating these systems.

But true community advocacy takes a massive amount of time and resources. Over the years, larger entities have used "casual coffee meetings" to extract Andrew's ideas and cherry-pick his frameworks. Some have even blatantly copied them.

But here’s the truth: in a world full of duplication and AI, where does the real know-how and deep expertise actually lie? It lies with the original innovators. 🧠🔥

Faced with the blatant extraction of his intellectual property and needing to keep the lights on and fund the work required for our clients, Andrew came up with a solution. He created HOP Cafe as our official commercial support arm in the city. ☕✨

Launching post-lockdown in 2021, the timing was brilliant. It became a safe space for people to reconnect in person and rebuild community ties. Every single purchase directly helped keep our housing and financial advocacy alive.

Close the doors, let staff go, due to an extended street closure with zero access forced our physical cafe doors to close.

But the mission: Our own independence.

HOP director was honoured to attend the 8-year celebration of the Mo‘ui Lelei Tou leleleka Group yesterday, an Auckland-based Tongan elderly wellbeing group originally established by the late father of Andrew Lavulavu.

The event was a beautiful reminder of the importance of family, culture, community, and ensuring our elders remain connected rather than isolated.

Mālō ‘aupito and a huge shout out to everyone serving elderly communities quietly behind the scenes every week ❤️

The group is currently seeking support toward transport and van resourcing to help elderly members continue attending and staying connected with the community.

The NZ Government’s new carve-out lets foreign investors buy homes over $5M. It’s not a reversal of the 2018 ban—but it’s a loophole for the ultra-wealthy.

📉 Less than 1% of homes qualify. No jobs created. No productivity boost. Just capital flight and speculative pressure.

🏠 We’ve seen this before: absentee ownership, empty homes, and locals priced out. Glen Innes rebranded as “luxury land”? That’s gentrification on steroids.

Kia Ora HOP Café Friends 🙏🏽

After 3 months of being unable to operate, we have reached a point where it’s no longer financially sustainable to keep HOP Café open. It is with deep regret, but also immense gratitude and appreciation for every single person who walked through our doors and supported us, that we share the news of our closure.

From day one, our journey was filled with challenges, like opening after lockdowns, navigating the c19 lockdown traffic light system, the Auckland floods and finally these last 3 months of closure (out of our control) which became the final straw for our small business.

Yet, through it all, we are truly amazed by what we achieved together since opening on November 1st, 2021. We are so grateful for the chance to be part of this community and to serve and connect with each of you.

On behalf of myself and the incredible team who poured their energy, smiles, and care into every cup of coffee, thank you. You all made HOP Café more than just a place to eat and drink.
You made it a family. We created a brand 🫶🏽
