Galloway Central Otago

Galloway Central Otago Beautiful Place for Swimming, Cycling & Horse Riding. 4km from Alexandra off Road 85 over the Manuherikia River. Small rural community with big spirit.

Off Manuherikia Road, over the Bridge on Galloway Road. History of Galloway:
For the thousands of gold prospectors in the 1860s who trekked the arduous Dunstan Trail, reaching Galloway Flat meant they had finally conquered the last of four ranges separating Dunedin from Upper Dunstan(Clyde). Galloway is the name of a large sheep station established on the flat in 1858. The beautifully original st

ation homestead and equally historic stacked stone farm buildings dating back to the 1860s can easily be seen from the Rail Trail. Burt Munro "The World's Fastest Indian" from Invercargil - One mile straight motorbike ride was in Galloway. Vincent County Rally (VCR):
In 1987 the Vincent County Rally started to be hosted on the banks of the Manuhirikia at Galloway, just out of Alexandra. This rally runs on the Friday and Saturday night that is closest to Waitangi day and has over 1500 members. Today Galloway have ..... xyz residents

Fishing & Swimming: The Manuherikia River is usually quite low in the summer. An enjoyable few hours can be spent walking in the wide gravelly willow lined river bed, crossing and re-crossing at will. The water is warm and the fords seldom more than calf deep. The river holds a good number of small (average 1/2 lb) brown trout. and great swimming hols. In Winter The Lower Manorburn dam is one of the most popular places for ice skating in New Zealand. People have been skating on the Manorburn dam since it’s construction in the early 1900′s. During the 1950′s and 1960′s dozens of buses would travel from Invercargill and Dunedin filled with skaters. Since 1992 the number of skaters making use of the dam has plummeted due to the local ice sports organisation no longer officially opening the dam for skating. However, the ice does freeze most years and serious natural ice skaters frequent the dam regularly during the winter months.
