The word Ghata means "pot or vessel" and sthapana means "to establish". Combining the words "Ghatasthapana" means creating the pot. Barley is planted on the sand beside the Ghata and grows for 10 days to become Jamara. The holy water pot or pitcher represents the goddess Durga, who is revered to mark the triumph of good over evil.
