Also known as the Artichoke Thistle, it throws up huge silvery, sculptural leaves that can reach two metres, then crowns them with electric purple flowers in late summer that the bees simply cannot leave alone. It is pure architectural drama for a sunny border, and it happens to be a close cousin of the edible artichoke.

Nobody buys this plant for the name. Sneezewort. Centuries ago people dried the leaves and used them as sneezing powder, and somehow that became its whole identity.

The flowers have spent a few hundred years living it down, and they’ve done well. From June to September Achillea ptarmica covers itself in small white pompoms, the kind florists have been sneaking into bouquets for generations. Bees love it, frost doesn’t bother it, and unlike most yarrows it’s perfectly happy in soil that stays a little moist.

It starts as an unassuming bare root that gives away nothing of what’s coming. We offer them for spring planting: pop one in a sunny spot, and it just gets on with it.

For once, the botanists were feeling poetic. This little flower is called Chionodoxa, which is Greek for Glory of the Snow, and it earned the name honestly: it blooms so early that it often pushes up through the last patches of melting snow.

Each star-shaped bloom is modest on its own, just 15 cm tall. But that's not how you plant them. Tuck a good handful of bulbs into the ground in autumn, leave them undisturbed, and they'll multiply and self-seed year after year until you have a proper carpet of blue under the bare trees, flowering while the rest of the garden is still asleep.

The bees will thank you too. Chionodoxa is one of the very first meals of the year for early pollinators, at a time when there's hardly anything else on the menu.
Plant in autumn, enjoy every February and March for years to come. Some of the best things in the garden are the ones you only have to do once.

From this to this. Coreopsis Moonbeam arrives as a scruffy little bundle of bare roots, and honestly you’d walk past it at a plant fair. Then summer comes and it’s covered in soft lemon yellow flowers, and it just doesn’t stop. Early summer right through to autumn.

Gardeners call coreopsis “tickseed”, which has to be the most unfair nickname in the plant world. It’s the seeds’ fault, they look like tiny ticks. The flowers had nothing to do with it.

The thing we love about Moonbeam is how little it asks of you. It shrugs off dry spells, thrives in poor soil where fussier plants sulk, the bees and butterflies adore it, and the deer leave it alone. It’s been a favourite in gardens for decades and it’s earned every bit of it.

Plant the bare root in spring, water it in, and that’s you done. Really.

Don’t throw away your amaryllis after the flowers fade 🌺

So many people ask us how to save an amaryllis bulb, and the answer is easier than you’d think. Cut the flower stalk once it’s done, but leave the leaves on. They’re busy feeding the bulb for next season.

Then, how to get your amaryllis bulb to flower again: treat it like a houseplant all summer, water and feed it, and give it plenty of light. In autumn, let it rest somewhere cool, dark and dry for about 8 weeks, no water at all. That rest is what triggers the next round of flowers.

And how long does an amaryllis bulb take to bloom after waking up? Usually 6 to 8 weeks from the moment you start watering again, so count backwards from when you want flowers. Start in early November and you’ll have blooms for Christmas 🎄

Yes, this flower actually smells like chocolate 🍫

This is chocolate cosmos (Cosmos atrosanguineus ‘Chocamocha’), deep velvet red, with a cocoa scent that gets stronger on warm afternoons.

A few things you might not know about this one: it comes from Mexico, where the wild species was thought to be extinct for decades. Nearly every chocolate cosmos in the world descends from a single plant kept going since the early 1900s. The scent comes from vanillin, the same compound found in vanilla and cocoa. And it grows from a tuber, so you can lift and store it over winter just like a dahlia.

A Kniphofia without the red or orange

This is Kniphofia ‘Ice Queen’, and the name oversells the white a bit. The buds open greenish yellow and fade to soft lemon and cream, so every spike ends up two toned for weeks. Honestly prettier than white would be.

The best part: it flowers late summer into autumn, when the rest of the border has mostly given up.

A few things worth knowing:

🌼 Gets tall, 1.2 to 1.5 metres, so it does the back of the border work
🌼 The soft yellow goes with everything: grasses, echinacea, salvias. The orange types tend to pick fights.
🌼 Full sun, decent drainage, then just leave it alone
🌼 Winter wet is what kills them. Not the cold.

Rose Lily ‘Angela’ is one we decided to grow ourselves this season, just to test it out in our own yard, and we’re so pleased with the result.

The flowers are large, double and beautifully white, with that soft rose like shape that makes rose lilies so special. They have the elegance of a lily, but with fuller petals, no pollen and a gentle fragrance.

Geum Apricot Pearl is having a moment 🍑

Soft apricot petals with a warm pink blush, swaying on tall wiry stems all through summer. One of those perennials that just keeps going, week after week, without asking much in return.
