Hiking Tour Around Santa Maria – Azores

Last week, I completed this hut-to-hut hiking tour for the second time. After an introduction explaining how the shelters and trail markings work, we set off on our adventure.

Our group consists of six women, and we immediately hit it off. During this hiking trip, you stay in shelters that truly bring you back to basics: no electricity, everything powered by solar energy, a sawdust toilet, and a single gas burner for cooking and heating water. Washing dishes is done outside, whether in sunshine or rain, often with a breathtaking view. Every shelter is different, which makes each overnight stay a new surprise.

The hikes can be described in one word: magnificent. We walk through green tunnels, mystical forests, along cliffs, over ancient lava stones, and almost always with the ocean nearby.

This journey has come to an end. I took many photos of our adventures, and you’ll definitely see them featured soon on our social media channels.

Today, the second hiking week begins. We’ll be visiting São Miguel, Terceira, and Pico — once again searching for beautiful images and fresh stories for our websites and blogs.
