Built, taped, and boxed this past week for .

I don't generally tag owners of wheels and bikes and stuff leaving the shop, but sometimes I can't resist. James is a rad guy, but personal feelings aside, this is someone who will trash equipment when given the chance... And I mean that in a good way. These wheels will head out on over-the-top training rides, and probably a few races where they will have to ride blindly over stone, gravel, and asphalt all while carrying all of James' bikepacking gear.

Building wheels for any client is a process, and one I enjoy, why else would I do it? But when I get to build wheels for people on any "extreme" of the spectrum, it presents a special challenge... and I love me a good challenge! Spoke tension balance goes from "important" to "paramount" and material choice becomes make it or break it. Literally. This wheelset may not know it yet, but it's got some hard work ahead of it, but if I may be so bold to say: this setup is down to clown.

The DT 240 hub needs no introduction, with palmares longer than my average Insta post. Same story up front with the SON 28 powering a
setup, ofc. And one of my fav's, the beautifully named DT XM421 SS X12 7191M rims ready for duty. (DT hmu for naming advice lol).

If you don't know James, give him a follow. He mostly posts photos of dogs, and sometimes photos of silly ultra-race adventures. 😉

Update!
The Joergen-embargo has been lifted! Actually, it was lifted a few days ago, but I have been mega swamped trying to gear up for autumn. Everyone is pulling their dusty MTBs and cyclocross rigs out if the shed, and we are pulling out all the stops here at HQ to get you rolling before winter sets in.

Repair slots are cruising along just fine, about a 1-4 week wait depending on what you're looking for. Wheelbuilds same story, and custom builds vary wildly. Pro tip if you're thinking about a new bike or custom anything, get it started now because all the parts you'll need are already ordered and you don't want someone else swooping that new groupset. Production in Asia is booked solid, so the delivery dates you're seeing won't get any shorter for a while.

In other news, fall is here in the Netherlands, which means the sandy tracks and trails in the woods will start to harden up and get faaaaast. I for one am very excited.

Also, please don't report this post. 🤦

You think that Onyx is a big fan of Simon Garfunkel? You know, being into the sound of silence, and all...?

These trail wheels are heading for a long life of up/down as well as XC and everything in between. Mud, snow (maybe), sand (definitely), and hopefully and bunch of stones and roots... A while working silently, as if at peace with their destiny.

Really truly, the silence of Onyx hubs is such a treat. Almost every client that has used or borrow the loaner set at the shop has come back and ordered a set. Pair the silence with the near-instant engagement and galldarnit you've got some nice hubs.

And did I mention they're made in the Midwest of the USA? Objectively the most beautiful place in the world. 😉

Comments, questions, confessions, whack them in the comments below! I'll even get the first one out if the way for you!

Custom built frames have always been an interesting topic. Well, maybe way back when they were normal, but in the days of mass production, custom frames often fall by the wayside. When ordering a frame like this, you're generally looking at a more involved process and a longer than normal wait for delivery... leaving price out of the discussion for now, at least.

I've been working more and more often with framebuilders this past year, and mostly because the timeline of these frames is starting to become "normal". Gone are the days of getting a production frame to build your dream bike tomorrow, it's all just taking a bit longer, so that allows myself together with the client to look objectively at different frames and frame options. When delivery times are roughly the same, it gives you the room to weigh the options more evenly.

This Murmur from Starling is breathtaking... and I know, I hear myself when I say that, it sounds ridiculous. "Breathtaking", how cliché. But as a Murmur owner myself, and knowing all the ups and downs of frame number 62, just seeing what has been done to polish this model some 363 frames later... Joe's been busy in the workshop, oh good god, his work has paid off.

This frame will head of to the Cerakote'er next week where it will get some colour and protection, and that upon return it will be built into a trail-machine for the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. This bike will help give the high-ceiling to allow this client to up their skills as much as they want, while offering the bandwidth to be a proper enduro machine if need be.

French fries and mayo bacon and eggs, forgetting something upstairs and not being able to find your keys even though you're certain you out them in your left pocket, I mean, you always put them there, geez where are they, you just needed to grab that one thing...! Some things just go together, some combinations are timeless. This is one of 'em.

I didn't even know Europeans put mayo on their fries, and I still think it's weird, but I'll be damned if it isn't delicious. Roughly the same time I started putting mayo (and even applesauce! Savages...) on my fries, I started working with Duke. They were new on the scene and out to prove themselves, and damn did they ever. Just. Like. Mayo. Y'all see the pattern here?

And Hope. Y'all, I don't think I need to explain Hope to you, but just in case... You know that on story your parents tell you of that old car their neighbour had? Yeah the one that even after years of neglect and trudging through the mud? The one that no matter what, it just always started. No matter what, it never left them out in the cold. That's like Hope hubs, but like, with bikes.

You ever wonder where these insane posts come from? Yeah me too. But I reckon this one's because I'm hungry.

Finding the little nooks and crannies, secret session spots, and homemade trails in the Netherlands is almost a sport in and of itself. Gravel and mountain bikes have motivated tons of people to take to topography maps and read old hiking reports on archived GeoCities sites (or is that just me?) to search out this little gems. The only thing more rad than seeing people searching out these spots, are the people building them.

I was glad to out this past weekend, in the fall it seems like every nice weekend is the last of the year and you have to squeze every last drop, just in case the rain starts and doesn't stop until spring.

So here's a weird one!

Okay okay, l know cargo bikes are niche thing. I also know most of you have already stopped reading this. That's cool man. I get it. I'm not super into cargo bikes either! But I am definitely into mobility and carrying a crapload of stuff. I'm also way into custom everything. And this bike is pretty custom, and will carry a crapload of stuff. Win win!

This bike will evolve through the years as a shop hauler, I'll break stuff on it, and repair it using spokes and cotton bar tape. Someday I'll finishing wiring the internal USB charging circuit and switch. And at some point it'll get a bike rack to, you know, carry your bikes with your bike (cue Xzibit comments). But for now, this bike is going to rip around the city picking up a chair someone else is throwing away that I'll definitely "get around to fix this weekend, I swear".

Larry Vs. Harry is a cool company, and their Bullitt is really the pinnacle of this specific subset of cargo bikes. It's light, quick, and stable. Perfect. You probably already know them, they are truly ubiquitous, but if not give 'em a follow.

This bike is an "auto van de zaak", but I've got another one on deck as a custom build for a client. Also keen on your own cargo bike? Get in touch today!

Thanks to for supplying the frame! ❤️❤️

An ode to hackers, inventors, and reverse-engineering. That's what this is. This is a tip of the hat to people who take their bikes into their own hands and get to work, late into the night with dirty hands and probably-too-many cups of coffee. Probably, not coincidentally, how Ratio came about their 12 speed Upgrade Kit.

Companies like this warm my cold dead black heart, we as consumers can choose to take the products we use into our own hands and make them repairable, hackable, and our own. Companies that produce tools and parts to further your ability to truly own your bike, your car, or even just your washing machine are saving the f**king planet y'all. Round of applause for them, and just a quick middle finger to John Deere, as is customary these days 😂

Y'all bombed my inbox when Ratio released this kit, and rightfully so. Anyone who's been following along for a bit has seen the "Budget Mullet" hack I've been doing, switching the cable fins on SRAM derailleurs to be able to use giant cassettes for adventures on my gravel bike. In fact a number of you have this exact build on your bike! So when Ratio came along, it only made sense that this would be the next step.

I'm already offering these kits built into your new custom bike, and there are some truly sick builds in the hopper because of it, but supplies are limited. Get in touch asap!

If you're keen to know what Ratio is doing, and why it's so rad, hope over to their profile, .

Also, 666th post. Hehehe.

It's not every day that I introduce a brand so formally. You know, make a post showing all y'all some beautiful, thought out product from some corner of the bike industry. But then again, not everything needs an introduction, or maybe just doesn't warrant it. But I reckon Ingrid earns a proper intro, more than any other.

Ingrid is a small company located in Italy making big waves. You have probably already seen them bolted up on all sorts of "unicorn builds", and rightfully so. This CNC work, aesthetic, and quality just matches these fancy builds. But what they won't tell you is that you can use them in any build... True story.

Pictured is Ingrid's CRS-POP crankset and chainrings. This beauty is ready for road, gravel, and XC... Even trail if yer nasty. Next to this crank Ingrid machines lighter and heavier duty cranks, cassettes, and even *DELETED* for their newest *DELETED*, available *DELETED*. I can't wait! The cranks are three piece and the chainring attaches to the spindle using a custom made tool and a cassette locking tool. You can swap the spindle out for different BBs and bikes.

Being a smaller company, production is on the slower side of things, but that's just fine. Good things take time. Nonetheless, these cranks will be replacing standard options in builds at Parallel HQ wherever it makes sense. Keen to take one home yourself? Get in touch to order one.

Shop visit! One of my favourite things that Corona has put on hold is visiting other bike shops and builders to see how and what they're doing. This past weekend I was in Eindhoven briefly and before crossing the river again, we swung in to see Alex of St. Joris and Sputnik fame.

Chatting with Alex is always a treat, we're birds of a feather, nerds that can geek out about the silliest details. Plus, when visiting I get to see all the beautiful things he's been working on. The workshop is still in flux, Alex and Chaim have only recently moved house to this shop.

Frame builders have always been the wizards of the bike industry for me... Flux, silver, brass, steel, all mixed together with FIRE to make a bike. Too hot and you'll burn a hole in the tubing. Too cold and something else bad will happen (I literally don't know... starving the joint?). That's some crazy stuff, and of all the wizards I know, Alex is basically Dumbledore.

Also, I've never read Harry Potter... Is it good to be Dumbledore? I mean it well Alex. 😉

I still remember that first time I saw that engraved "W" on a bike. It was a set of polished silver MI5 hubs on Max's bike (Hi Max!). I honestly can't even remember what the rest of the bike was, but I remember grabbing Max's wheel on a ride and seeing that engraved "W" just turning round and round in front of me. Ever since then White has always been the most beautiful in my eyes.

These G25a rims were introduced actually a fair while ago, but ever the curmudgeon, it took me a while to warm up to them. But now I'm glad to have them in stock. These build up solid, stable, and quickly. Perfect.

This wheelset is a rebuild, a jump up in tire size, and prep for a very MTB-ey gravel bike. The DT 350 needs no introduction, and the SON 28 up front speaks for itself as well.

White Industries is an interesting company. Tucked away in the Northwest of the USA (Petaluma is NorCal, right?), White fits right in with the rest of the weirdos up that way, Paul, Phil, Chris... The whole lot of 'em. And just like all of those other names you've grown to know and love, make sure White gets added to that list (first name is Doug btw, I didn't know that...)❤️

Wild times y'all!

The bike industry in 2020 is a true roller coaster... I mean I guess 2020 is just a roller coaster, and the bike world is just along for the ride.

Normally I'd be celebrating my anniversary of moving to the Netherlands tonight, 5 years y'all! But instead I'm ordering parts for an ever growing waitlist.

I don't have a lot of time for reflection these days, or maybe I just don't make the time, but whenever I get a flash of deja vu, or a little perspective, I'm just amazed at what this shop is and has become. I owe that to the community surrounding this weird little shop, so cheers!

The Netherlands is cool, bikes are rad, y'all are way too nice, and corona can take a long walk off a short cliff.
