It was in 2002 that Swiss-based Georgian artist Andro Wekua and New York-based Hungarian artist Rita Ackermann were introduced and began a fruitful creative collaboration with each other. Their remote communication, fuelled by mutual experiences of pictures, music, poetry and plain talk, resulted in the publication of zine-like art books – first self-published (“Chapter 1”), then published by Swiss publisher Nieves (“Chapter 2” and “Chapter 3”).

This “Chapter 4”, published by Fergus McCaffrey and Tokyo-based Case Publishing, continues serving as a platform to showcase Ackermann’s and Wekua’s mutual artistic fruits. The large-format book includes paintings, drawings and collages of the two artists, created between 2008 and 2021.

The photographs were taken by almost square instant films and later trimmed 35 mm film format. The book combines Daido Moriyama images and his selected essays written for over 40 years since his youth. The title came from his comment: Even if photography paper and developing fluid would be disappeared, I would not be caring about. I will go to supermarket to buy eggs and vinegar to make cyanotype prints under sunlight using white and vinegar.

《Yama no Hikari - Tomomi MATSUTANI》
PURCHASE: https://www.shashasha.eu/en/book/yama-no-hikari

A romantic vision of rural Japan

Despite his relatively young age, Tomomi Matsutani’s second photobook “Yama no Hikari” (lit. “Light in the Mountains”) brims with a curiously refined nostalgia. His images, taken in western Japan (from Hyogo to Yamaguchi, Kyoto, Shimane, Okayama and Oita), depict sceneries and moments of life in rural Japan with a remarkable sense of affection and even yearning, inviting their viewers to accompany Matsutani on his leisurely journey. “It’s sad to see how the faces of the people I come across in the rural areas now resemble people in the city, and the increasing sturdy and perfunctory buildings are changing the scenery. Nevertheless, I know that I exist in a society of progress, and I won’t be able to go against it.” (from Tomomi Matsutani’s afterword, included in Japanese and English translation)

《TOKYO 2016-2017 - Michio YAMAUCHI》
PURCHASE: https://www.shashasha.eu/en/book/tokyo-2016-2017

Michio Yamauchi’s photobook “Tokyo 2016-2017” consists of color photographs taken in the streets of Tokyo in 2016 and 2017. While some of the photographs are “classical” street-photography, most of the images in Yamauchi’s series are snapshot portraits of single subjects. The series manages to reflect and portray the individuals inhabiting the city (and captured within its context) as well as the atmosphere of its streets, thereby constructing a balanced, thoughtful connection between the whole and the individual.

A project which began in 1980s, Tokyo 2005-2007 contains images which have primarily been captured in Shinjuku, Asakusa and Shibuya. The images both reflect and portray not only the individuals who inhabit the spaces of the city but also the atmosphere of the streets itself. Washio beautifully captures both the subject within its space, neither taking on a greater role to the other but represented and portrayed in complete balance, harmonious and interdependent.

《TOKYO 1985 - Shoshi OKAMOTO》
PURCHASE: https://www.shashasha.eu/en/artist/shoshi-okamoto

Tokyo street photography from the 1980s.

In 1985, Shoshi Okamoto was a student at the Tokyo Photographic College (now Tokyo Visual Arts College) and learned from two of the great Japanese masters of the medium, Daido Moriyama and Masahisa Fukase. Encouraged to shoot a lot of photographs, Okamoto spent the year of 1985 capturing the streets and alleys of Tokyo’s 23 wards. And yet the photos were never published, stored away in the back of a closet for more than 30 years before Okamoto found them again.
His photographs—a true time capsule of sorts—depict life in Tokyo in 1985 in singular episodes and situations, each filled with detail and vivacity.

“I was immediately transported to the streets of Tokyo in 1985, thirty-five years ago. That effect spoke to the accuracy and power of Okamoto’s portrayal of the reality and actuality of the streets’ bygone days.” —from Daido Moriyama’s afterword (available in Japanese and English translation)

Megumi Otsuka’s book “Tokyo” chronicles the Japanese megacity through small moments captured in black-and-white film images.

The 2012 book consists of 70 photographs taken since Otsuka began shooting street photography in Tokyo in 2003. Her photographic style focuses on innocuous, everyday scenes that radiate with subtle energy. Paying great care to the balance between her subjects and their surroundings, her photographs depict the inner workings of human nature, from joy to anger, sadness and emptiness.

Her series received an Honorable Mention in the 2020 Monovisions Photography Awards.

《TODOROKI - Keizo MOTODA》
PURCHASE: https://www.shashasha.eu/en/book/todoroki

“The sorrow, the joy of the people I pass, the flourishing and decline of the streets reach into me like the voice of living flesh.” — from Keizo Motoda’s afterword

Without the dates clearly stated in the caption of each photograph, it would be difficult to ascertain in which decade Keizo Motoda shot the images in his photobook “Todoroki” (the 2010s).
In his street portraits, Motoda lives his fascination with sub- and fringe cultures in Japanese society, from rockabillies, street performers, transvestites and lowrider enthusiasts to traveling buddhist monks. He turns his lens towards those who make the streets interesting.

“The Scent of Water” – Yukio Sakaue’s pensive visualisation of her hometown in rural Japan.
The picturesque, almost French-landscape-painting like photographs in Sakaue’s new photobook invite the reader not only to wander with her through the quiet, calm visual elegance of her hometown but inspire the motivation to try and look at one’s own familiar surroundings in a new way, finding previously unnoticed beauty.

“Let me continue to look closely at the scenery today and dream about the scenery tomorrow. The only wish I have is for time to move forward slowly.” (from Yukio Sakaue’s afterword (available in Japanese and English translation)

After Dazai and Daido Moriyama: Terayama, the third entry in Match & Company’s literary collaboration series with Daido Moriyama. Photographs by Daido Moriyama are paired with Oda Sakunosuke’s 1946 short-story “At the Horse Races” to pay tribute to one of Japan’s literary treasures.

“For this project, I paired photos of Osaka, taken by Daido Moriyama, with the short story “At the Horse Races”, written by Sakunosuke Oda in 1946, and edited them into this book. […]
I told Moriyama I wanted to create a book that, by pairing them together, would give an entirely new layer of expression to both his photographs of Osaka and the words of Sakunosuke Oda.

My trick to let two artists, each with a strong personality, meet within the space of a book to stimulate each other, has worked.”

— from designer Satoshi Machiguchi’s afterword
