Queen Phillipa is known as the first Black Queen of Britain, after marrying King Edward III. She is best remembered as the kind woman who persuaded her husband to save the lives of the Burghers of Calais, whom he had planned to execute as an example to the townspeople in 1347. This popularity helped maintain peace in England throughout Edward's long reign.

Philippa was of Black Moorish ancestry, born to parents William I, Count of Hainaut, and Joan of Valois, Countess of Hainaut, granddaughter of Philip III of France.

The world is changing. 🌍

People are being forced to recognise their privilege and whilst some run away and break, others are leaning in and embracing the need for change.

This picture was taken from the side of Paradiso Amsterdam, a night club that has been around since the 60’s. This really made me stop and stare because of how it was casually supporting something that impacts and connections every person of colour.

It also highlighted just how much the world is listening up and how much nicer we are making this world for little black kids to grow up in!

Sara Forbes Bonetta, an Egbado princess of the Yoruba people in West Africa and the godchild of Queen Victoria.

She was sold into slavery aged five and presented as a "diplomatic gift" to Captain Frederick Forbes brought to England. There, she met Queen Victoria: "Victoria was so affected by this little girl arriving she wrote about it in her diary and took her under her wing, paid for her education and took an interest in her and her daughter for the rest of their lives."

There are several back figures that have played a significant role in England's most recognizable landmarks that are unknown, and Sarah Forbes Bonetta is one of them.
