The details of the FIRS’ partnership with MATAN was disclosed yesterday at a Stakeholders Engagement Programme on the VAT DIRECT Initiative, held in Lagos State. The partnership will see the FIRS collaborating with the association to deploy technology to enumerate traders for collecting and remitting VAT to the Service, consequently leading to an expansion of the tax net and increased revenue for the Federation

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has partnered with the Market Traders Association of Nigeria (MATAN) to collect and remit Value Added Tax (VAT) to the FIRS from the country’s markets, especially in the informal sector.

The Association which has a membership of well over 40 million traders across the country’s 774 local governments, and 36 States plus the Federal Capital Territory is the biggest player in Nigeria’s market space.

Our efforts should not be taken for granted, thriving in business here in Bayelsa state requires hard effort and patience, the level of high rate of taxes we are faced with it's not an easy one, for a businessman or woman to make profit from their businesses, rather we make profit for Government revenue agent's. For the works of our hands to be bless as the Lord said, wrath of men as fallen upon business people in the state of Bayelsa. (Protest awaits you all tax agencies).

Government of Bayelsa state should look deep into this matter of multiple and excessive taxation we are phased with, small scale businesses can no longer thrive in her state. Businesses that suppose progressing are in the phase of retrogressions because of multiple taxes.

LIST OF TAXES
Small shop owner is paying per year,
(1) Under the Environmental sanitation.
(a) sanitation fee #8,000
(b) basket renewal fee #3,000
(c) over shading fee #1,000 per month amount to #12000 yearly.
(d) illegal structure permit #15,000

Local government operational is #5,000

Ministry of Environment fee is #2,000

Board of internal revenue for #3,000

In summery 8,000 + 3,000 + 15,000 + 5,000 + 2,000 + 3'000 = # 48,000 per shop, if a small scale business is paying this amount of money to this various offices, how much will be left in their profits?

Season greetings members of our great union. On behalf of the Chairman and executives of Izon Traders Association, I send you great tidings in this yuletide season. It's my pleasure to inform you that Izon Traders Association is making progress already in negotiations as regards our revenue payments through the tireless efforts of the Chairman and Executives of the union. On this note and several other pending matters the Chairman, through the office of the Secretary general of Izon Traders Association has called for a meeting between the executives and zonal chairmen and it's assistants to discuss and proffer timely solutions to matters that must benefit every member of our great union. The resolves of the meeting which will be shared in our platform for every member to observe immediately after the meeting, as every member is promised to be carried along.
