My TFN Journey to Teach, Lead, and Impact (Week 1).
Stepping into the world of teaching wasn’t a decision I made lightly—it was a calling deeply rooted in my desire to change lives and contribute to a larger movement for systemic change. I still remember the day I joined Teach For Nigeria, filled with a mixture of excitement and uncertainty. Little did I know that the journey ahead would not only test my limits but also help me grow into a leader, mentor, and advocate for my students.
The training I had from TFN reshaped my perception of education, introducing me to a world where teaching was much more than imparting knowledge—it was about creating a safe space where students could express themselves, develop critical thinking, and grow into confident leaders. I knew I had to bring this vision to life in my placement community, where I would spend the next few years.
On my first day at the school, I was welcomed by challenges that extended far beyond the classroom. The school was prone to flooding, which disrupted learning spaces and required constant reorganization to ensure the safety of the students. It was clear that my role would involve not only teaching but also advocating for better learning conditions and providing emotional support to learners facing these daily disruptions.
Despite the hurdles, I was determined to create an environment where my students could thrive. I focused on instilling a growth mindset, believing that with the right encouragement, they could overcome any obstacles.
Through this process, I encountered Idris, a nine-year-old learner in my class, whose frequent disengagement toward school and classwork became a personal challenge. His words, "I don't care," echoed in my mind as I sought ways to break through to him and others who seemed to share his outlook. I realized that motivating my students required patience, empathy, and innovative approaches tailored to their unique needs.
In every lesson, whether it was in the classroom or the broader community, I learned as much as I taught. I realized that leadership was not about commanding change from the top but nurturing it from within. My actions as a teacher-leader became focused on creating a space where students could explore their potential, take ownership of their learning, and envision a future beyond the limitations placed on them.
My journey has been one of continuous reflection and growth. The support of my fellow partner, coaches Ifeoluwa Fajemirokun, Winifred Nnamdi Chukwuma,Ajayi Babajide Olusola and the entire TFN community has been invaluable. Together, we are driven by a common purpose: to ensure that one day, every Nigerian child will have access to excellent education.
As I look ahead, I remain committed to this mission, guided by my faith, resilience, and the belief that the change we seek in our education system begins with each step we take in the classroom, one student at a time.
