Over a week ago , I attended the African Female CEO conference organised by where I also had the great pleasure of moderating a panel session on "Women Leading Social Impact in Africa : Purpose , Climate and Communities.

The panelists were very engaging and the discussion was very insightful. I learned a lot about the great work the panelists were doing in their respective fields and how their initiatives are driving meaningful change in the society . The event was a great success and I am already looking forward to next year's event . Kudos to for a great conference!!!

Recently, completed the Youth empowerment climate leadership training put together by and . I commend these organisations for putting together this introductory program, which is perfect for young people interested in climate change and sustainability. The courses offer an introductory crash course on the fundamentals of climate change, providing participants with essential knowledge to pursue further study in this critical area.

For youths interested in climate change who are yet sign up, I highly recommend this opportunity to broaden your understanding and contribute to global climate action.

Excited to have attended the close out event of a pilot initiative by the Lagos State Office of the special adviser on Climate change and Circular economy. The inspiring event took place at the Girls' Correctional Centre in Idi Araba, Lagos, focused on empowering young offenders with the skills and knowledge to forge careers in the recycling space. Sponsored by the Lagos State Office of the Special Adviser on Climate Change and Circular Economy, the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, and other organizations, this pioneering initiative introduced the girls to the principles of circularity. It was an incredible experience to see these young women being equipped with the tools to shape a sustainable future. A truly innovative step towards change! kudos to Titilayo Oshodi MCIPM, FISMN and everyone involved in making the project a success

Are Greenwashing and greenhushing potential concerns in Nigeria?

Despite Nigeria becoming the first African country to adopt IFRS S1 and S2 Sustainability Disclosure Standards, there is a need for clarity regarding their implementation and subsequent regulatory oversight by the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN). While the FRC issued warnings against greenwashing (See Chris Ugwu “FRCN warns companies against greenwashing in reporting sustainability”, Nairametrics). It would also be ideal for FRCN to issue precautionary warnings regarding greenhushing. When companies become overly cautious not to greenwash, it is almost certain that they will greenhush. It is crucial for the FRCN to address greenhushing and implement measures to encourage honest disclosure of sustainability efforts, regardless of scale. While notable instances of greenwashing may not yet be prevalent in Nigeria due to the fact that sustainability requirements and implementation is a nouvelle idea in Nigeria, with the proper implementation of IFRS S1 and S2, there is a likelihood it will occur, and the subsequent backlash may be followed by greenhushing. FRCN in its implementation of policies and procedures in tackling greenwashing should ensure that these policies do not become so stringent, that the counter effect causes greenhushing. Addressing greenhushing early on is imperative for Nigeria’s sustainability efforts

Greenhushing can be defined as a situation whereby companies deliberately choose not to disclose their sustainability goals, commitments and activities, even when they are genuine, feasible and done with true intentions, in order to avoid being referred to as a “greenwashers”.While it is understandable that companies want to be silent about some of their sustainability efforts, in order not to open up themselves for scrutiny and potentially be found guilty of greenwashing. It is equally important that companies are open about their sustainability efforts, nobody expects perfection from companies regardless of their size. By sharing details about their sustainability journey, brands can inspire others who have yet to embark on the sustainability path. Also, brands that share their sustainability openly and honestly are bound to gain a larger customer base and investment from green investors. In addition, sharing sustainability efforts can also initiate industry conversations, which may lead to idea sharing between the said companies, their competitors and stakeholders. Greenwashing is bad, but so is greenhushing, they are equally detrimental to the cause of sustainability.
