Hereโ€™s a peek of behind the scenes of my teaching world ๐Ÿ“šโœ๏ธ

Today, Iโ€™m teaching a year 4 learner in UK Homophones and I like using resources from Twinkl Resources for my UK learners This is where the magic begins!

What does your own workday look like?

Teaching chose me,
It has become a calling for me. ๐Ÿ’–

I became an educator because education wouldnโ€™t let me go.

Every day, Iโ€™m reminded of the joy that comes when a child learns something new. I find delight in seeing the light bulb go on in their eyes when they understand a concept or when can blend a word on their own.

I love the pure joy on their faces when they enjoyed a lesson. It is priceless.

To you reading this post, Why did you choose your career?

Hello, in case you are meeting me for the first time, I am Adebola, my learners call me Ms Debbie. Iโ€™ve been privileged to be an educator for close to a decade and an online tutor to children between ages 5 and 12 years for over a year and counting.

My mission is to help children build a strong and solid foundation in Math and English that will be a spring board for their academic success.

Hereโ€™s a Fun fact about me: I am tech savvy, I canโ€™t get enough of technology, before I will give someone something that has to do with a software installation or repair to do for me, hmmm. Hardware? No not me, but software issues? I love the challenge, I hardly give such issues out for repair, I love to solve them myself, except the solution is not online.

Iโ€™m excited to share my journey over the next 21 days with

If you read up till this point, please let me know in the comments if you have any issues with your child in the area of Math, reading, phonics and Iโ€™ll see how I can help.

Helping a struggling preschooler improve their reading skills requires a supportive and engaging approach. Here are some tips to encourage their development:

1. Create a positive reading environment: Make reading a enjoyable experience with cozy reading nooks, engaging books, and enthusiastic interactions. Put books where they can see them and condition them to love books.

2. Read aloud daily: Share stories with expressive voices, gestures, and facial expressions to bring stories to life. Read to them and with them, even if itโ€™s just for 10mins.

3. Interactive reading: Encourage participation by pointing to words, identifying pictures, and asking questions.

4. Alphabetic awareness: Reinforce their existing knowledge of letters, sounds, and basic phonics concepts through play and interactive activities.

5. Word building and recognition: If you have it use blocks, magnets, or foam letters to construct simple words and foster recognition.

6. Rhyming and word families: Explore rhyming games, songs, and stories to develop phonological awareness.

7. Make it hands-on: Incorporate play-based activities like matching games, puzzles, and sensory experiences to reinforce reading concepts.

8. Keep it short and fun: Begin with brief reading sessions (5-10 minutes) and gradually increase duration as attention spans grow.

9. Be patient and encouraging: Celebrate small successes and offer support, understanding that every child learns at their own pace.

10. Communicate with teachers and caregivers: Collaborate to ensure consistent support and reinforcement across environments.

Remember, the goal is to nurture a love for reading and learning in your preschooler. By making it enjoyable and engaging, you'll help them develop essential reading skills and a strong foundation for future academic success!

Use child sized scissors for cutting, string beads or macaroni on twine, finger painting, playing with plasticine also called playdough, writing in the sand with a paint brush or finger or dried up marker or stick, doing jig saw puzzles, playing with sand, lacing activities, playing with cloth pegs, painting with cotton buds or paint brushes, tearing news papers, writing on a mounted board or paper on the wall etc, are some activities you can encourage your child to do. It also benefits older children too, not just preschoolers or toddlers.

Writing is just like walking, you can't force a child that is not ready to do it. You can encourage and do exercises that will develop the muscles and the skill with the activities listed below, but don't put the child under unnecessary pressure.

" See the difference between the hand of a preschool (left) and the hand of a 7-year-old (right). Parents regularly ask because their preschool age child is unable to write. This is why! His hands are still unfolding and not fully formed. So what should we do to support them? PLAY! Plasticine, painting, cutting, paste, go out to play, digging on earth, sensory games, disguise, science experiments, string, puzzles, throwing balls, etc. All these things help their hands develop. When they are physically ready to write, they will! No need to rush them, they'll show you when they're ready!

* A child's hand will continue to grow after the age of 7 This is just a comparison between a young child and an older child."

75% of early years teachers in Nigeria are not helping their learners develop wholly.โ˜น๏ธ

Most early years educators are more interested in teaching maths and English than any other area of learning for children in early years.

I hate to say this but I have to say it, an early years educator is a nanny for the children in your class.

Their care, emotional and social well being should be top on your list.

I have been teaching in the early years for 10years and I'm more interested in having;

a confident child,

a child that can share opinions, ideas and interests,

a child who can dress and feed him/herself,

a child who can share toys during play and understands to wait for one's turn,

a child that can resolve conflict without aggression, violence or cry,

a child that will enjoy singing, dancing and creating imaginary stories.

Early years is more like preparing the children for the life ahead but most of us have left our jobs and now doing primary school teachers jobs.

No primary school teacher has time to teach them how to sit still, pay focused attention, feed themselves, button their shirts, tie shoe laces, hold a pencil or even clean up after using the toilet.

Let's slow down on the race to write numbers and letters and focus on things that will help them become better primary school learners

The truth is, when we help children build a strong foundation and confidence, they can learn anything that is being taught as they mature in class.

Early years should be fun... let's ensure that the children enjoy being children.
