A’bot Gudang is a self-taught Bidayuh artist whose distinctive Orang Ulu motifs are inspired by Sarawak’s lush rainforests and their mysterious inhabitants. From towering durian trees and lacy ferns to small jungle leeches, the design is hand-painted on various materials and each one is an original work of art.

THE BEJALAI COLLECTION
Sustainably Woven. Community Powered. Inherently Luxurious.

The Bejalai Collection is a luxury narrative that unites two brands — the visionary aesthetics of The Ranee with the handcrafted mastery of .

The Bejalai Collection adopts the Ishidatami pattern with a sustainable modern material known as Eco Craft エコクラフト ( E-ko Ku-ra-fu-to) a material traditionally used for tying parcels, and can be made of recycled paper pulp.

The Ishidatami (石畳) pattern is a traditional Japanese design that translates to “stone paving”, and is primarily associated with the Ichimatsu (checkerboard) pattern and because the design continues uninterrupted from side to side, it powerfully symbolizes eternity, prosperity, and continuous success.

Handwoven by women artisans of Sarawak, the Bejalai bags are handstitched with luxe calfskin straps and robust leather pocket, removable suede pouch and key clip, ensuring that essentials are organized and protected.

The highlight of the bag is a leather marquetry bag charm, made from zero-waste leather precisely cut and meticulously hand assembled to create the “Bungai Terung” pattern — this Sarawak tattoo design was traditionally hand tapped onto the shoulders of young Iban men as they prepare to journey in life.

The Bejalai Collection is the perfect pièce de résistance for enhancing a dreamy summer wardrobe, and embraces a story of collaborative empowerment, cultural heritage, and the living traditions of a community.

The scent of damp earth and the heavy sweetness of ripe paddy hung thick beneath the morning sun. This was the season of the Seluk basket, and every Iban farmer carried the weight of the harvest strapped to their waist.

The basket itself is finely woven from pliable rattan. It wasn’t worn on the back like a jungle pack, but cinched to the belt with a woven rope, sitting just ready for the day’s work.

As the farmer moved through the terrace, clipping each stalk of rice with a small blade, the utilitarian Seluk basket proved its perfect design. It was used to harvest the fruit of their labor and its placement meant they never had to stop and bend down. In its flawless design, the basket showed that the most beautiful things in the Iban world were those made purely for the purpose of survival.

At The Ranee, we honor this legacy by creating pieces that are functional as decoration items but also contemporary while preserving the Iban heritage.

It was a tremendous privilege for The Ranee to take part in the landmark Merdeka Award Borneo Talk Series, hosted for the first time ever in Sarawak.

The session, framed under the banner, “Inspired by Ancestors, Driven by Dreams: You Are The Next Story,” was an outstanding gathering. Datin Rosemarie represented The Ranee, joining influential Sarawakian creatives Alena Murang and Marcos Kueh. Conversation sparked about how cultural legacy, personal identity, and deeply held traditions can drive progress and generate new avenues for the nation.

Building a thriving future depends on key principles: the courage to change, dedication to culture, and innovation from roots.

We are incredibly grateful to the brilliant Freda Liu for presiding over the discussion with such skill.

A special note of thanks goes to the Merdeka Award Trust, a foundation by PETRONAS and Shell, for recognizing and fostering outstanding achievements, and for ensuring this vital dialogue reached Borneo. The journey continues from here.
