It is an honour to be invited by Leadership Institute of Sarawak Civil Service to share about Bokashi Composting and demonstrate how we could turn our food waste into valuable compost by using bokashi bin.

We also learned a lot from the session by Mr. Dibasron from DBKU and Mr. Julian from Trienekens.

It is great to see more great initiatives and awareness in organisations and public 👍🏾👍🏾

Do I need to clean my bokashi bin after every use?

If you have just emptied your bokashi bin and want to start a new cycle within the next two days, it is alright that you do not clean your bokashi bin. The used bokashi bin is already teemed with a layer of the beneficial bokashi microbes, which means if you continuously adding food waste to your bokashi bin, you can skip washing your bin!

However, there is no harm if you prefer to wash it after every use. It is also recommended to wash your bokashi bin if:
1. your bokashi pre-compost has failed. If your bokashi pre-compost has a foul odor or has blue/green mold then it need to be cleaned before adding in more food waste.
2. you are not going to add any food waste to the bin the next few days. This is because an empty, uncleaned bokashi bin contains too much air and will grow bad blue/green mold within a few days.
3. the bokashi bin has unpleasant odors, a thorough clean will help to get rid of odor.

When cleaning the bokashi bin, do not use bleach or any harsh cleaning products. Rinse the bin with water and pour the waste water from rinsing onto your plants and garden, it is a powerful fertiliser. Then leave the bin to dry in the sun, you can then keep them until your next use.

Marking the start of Plastic Free July, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will also start the ban of using plastic straws and polystyrene at markets and hawker centres under its jurisdiction as a part of the council's commitment to protecting the environment and working towards a sustainable future.

We also start seeing alternatives to plastic straws in Kuching, such as the rice straws which is edible and degradable.

For Koru Team, plastic straws are often a single-use item that's just not necessary. What we do is to always request our cold drink to be served without a straw, or bring our own glass straw if we are going for drinks that goes better with straw, like ice kacang or pearl milk tea!

Plastic straw? Useful for minutes, harmful for decades. What we can do to stop that?
(1) Ask for no straw
(2) Bring our own reusable straws
(3) Use alternatives such as rice straws

Stop using plastic straw is an easy start, together we can get straws out of the top 10 list of items collected in beach cleanups.

When was your last visit to Sarawak State Library? The last time we went to the State Library was our secondary school time, that's long! So when we were informed that the Planet Us Environmental Exhibit will be held from 15th to 26th of June at State Library, we definitely want to pay a visit!

This program aims to boost awareness of environmental sustainability through a series of online and offline programs and their goal is to educate and inspire positive changes.

The Koru Team also found wide range of collections in the library, including a numbers of sustainable and environmental related materials worth reading. There are ample seatings so we spent sometime sit down and read, while waiting for the talk by Biji-biji Initiative "Business in Doing Good".

If you would like to know more about environmental sustainability, do pay a visit and there will be exhibition on environment, workshops, pledges as well as fun games for you to participate. You may also check up their website www.planetus-exhibit.com for more info about the program.

This maybe the first Electrical and Electronic Waste Collection Campaign in Sarikei, or at least, this is the first time the Koru Team noticed such campaign in Sarikei!

It will be held on 21st May 2022 at Kawasan Perkarangan Pejabat Majlis Daerah Sarikei (MDS) from 8am to 5pm! If you have electrical and electronic equipment that is damaged, obsolete or not needed, recycle them as they still contains precious metals such as gold, platinum! These can be used as raw materials to produce new products.

However, e-waste also contains heavy metals such as lead, mercury & cadmium. Improper disposal will adversely affect the environment.

So, let the professional handle them, and exchange your e-waste for cash!

Share with us how is the event as we might not be in Sarikei that time, but we would like to know! We hope this will be helpful for people in Sarikei and more will be coming in the future, and such good initiative will be accessible for everyone!
