Selamat Hari Raya Aifilfitri. Yes its Eid but thats not OUR culture and just because its in Arabic it doesn’t make the festive occasion a holy moment.
Its just a word that is used ti mark the end of Ramadan abd the start of Syawal but sadly in pop cumture and social media today it is replacing our own words to describe the festive season.
Malaysia is a cultural melting pot that is constantly evolving through the passage of time. And as new things develop in the world today new words, expressions and phrases pop up to describe them.
But did you know that no other moslem nation in the world celebrates Eid like Malaysians and its officially called Hari Raya Aidilfitri. An amalgamation of words to describe what is essentially a montn of celebrations marking the end of Ramadan. Eid represents the first day of Syawal but Hari Raya Aidilfitri or Hari Raya Puasa is special here in Malaysia
Like Jingle Bells and All i want for christmas and other carols, We have our very own classic Raya songs that nobody knows who the singers are but everybody knows the lyrics and tunes and we even feels nostalgic about. And try as you might the artists of today cannot write a new Raya song because we want the classics. Sounds like its as big as Christmas.
In fact it actually is as far as celebrating in Malaysia. Think about it. Malls decorate their centercourt like its a contest. Shopping Sales are crazy and packed all the time, even consumer media attention changes and strategies used by brands change too.
Even duit Raya, which we take for granted is a unique Malaysian phenomenon adopted from our Chinese brothers (thanks for mercun and bunga api too) and the pelita is adopted from our Indian brothers. Its so deeply ingrained we dont think about it.
So here is my point… Eid is Arabic and describes the first day of Syawal, the end of Ramadan and it is required that Moslems celebrate the day. It is in fact Haram to fast. More importantly Hari Raya Aidilfitri in Malaysia is a month long festivity celebrating eid. And if we lead the moslem world in islamic financing i think better to say Selamat Hari Raya than Eid.
