I’d been so busy, I forgot today was Tang Chek. But my friend remembered. She came over and we made Kuih Ee together, just the way my family used to — chatting, laughing, getting dough everywhere! 😆

In our Hokkien tradition, eating these means you’re a year older. But for me, it’s more about the memories piling up. Today, with the smell of ginger in the air and my friend’s laughter filling the kitchen, that warm, sticky feeling in my hands brought it all back. It felt just like home when my parents were here making these. Like we were stirring up all the old warmth.

Really grateful for days and friends like this. Happy Winter Solstice. 冬至快乐。

Reflecting on a fun afternoon of making ang ku kueh together — a chance to explore, and to appreciate why this little red tortoise-shaped kueh holds such a special place in celebrations.

The ang ku kueh carry a quiet symbolism — for health, for luck, and for prosperity. And while pressing the dough into the mold and shaping each piece, it felt like a reminder that traditions continue only when there’s care, thoughtfulness… and respect.

Seeing the finished ang ku kueh, I was happy with how they turned out (not bad for a first attempt!) — and there’s a quiet joy in knowing that even a simple afternoon with friends can help keep these traditions alive.
