Recent news about caregivers abusing children at childcare centres is deeply heartbreaking and worrying. Every child deserves to feel safe, protected, and respected. There is no excuse for abuse in any form.
At the same time, it’s important to understand that the role of a caregiver or preschool teacher is far more complex than many realise. Teaching young children is not only about academics — young children are still learning how to be human.
Many are still developing the ability to communicate clearly, understand and manage emotions, follow routines, share and take turns, and be independent (toileting, dressing, managing belongings).
In today’s world, we also see challenges like excessive gadget exposure, limited real-life interaction, shorter attention spans, and low frustration tolerance.
When words fail, children express through behaviour — biting, hitting, pushing, kicking, throwing objects, screaming, tantrums, refusing to cooperate, or shutting down. These moments can happen unexpectedly throughout the day.
This is where trained early childhood educators are needed. Our role is not to punish, but to guide:
✨ Proactively — teaching social-emotional skills through lessons, modelling, stories, and routines
✨ Reactively — calmly guiding children through real conflicts and big feelings in the moment
Because this work is emotionally demanding, teacher training and teacher wellbeing are essential.
At MuhsinKids Preschool, our teachers attend weekly in-house training, especially in social-emotional learning, alongside continuous professional development with experienced external trainers. We also prioritise strong team communication and support so teachers don’t feel overwhelmed — because a supported teacher can better support children.
Parents are important partners too. Consistent, positive communication between parents and teachers helps us understand each child better and provide guidance that is consistent between home and school.
Creating a safe environment for children starts with caring for the adults who care for them — and working hand in hand with families. ❤️
