As a multi-ethnic country, Myanmar has 135 ethnic groups. The Burmese or Bamar group is the biggest and the most prominent ethnic group in Myanmar. Each ethnic group has its own distinct clothings, food, culture and customs. Myanmar clothes can be divided into headwear, tops, skirts, slippers, men's wear, women's wear, traditional national costumes, etc. according to their functional and ceremonial roles.
KACHIN
Kachin men wear shirts, traditional jackets and sarong-like longyis. They also wear turbans or headdresses with tassels (hanging loosely on the right of the head). Sometimes, a ceremonial sword and a shoulder bag are given to the groom by the bride’s family as wedding gifts to welcome him into the family as their son-in-law.
Kachin women wear a traditional black coloured blouse & skirt called “eingyi”, hand-woven with floral and chequered designs decorated with silver coins and studs attached to their blouses.
The Kachin tribe is proud of showing off their traditional costumes at the Manau Festival (a very important cultural event for them) and other big events. At festivals, many young Kachin males wear white turbans while older men favour black turbans.
