- Natalia, you have a very interesting biography. You worked for 9 years in the banking sector, but then resigned from a managerial position, went to study art history. How did you understand that you want to connect your life with art and what in this area so hooked you that you took such a bold step?😯

- I have always loved art, I have always liked art spaces and their atmosphere. All my trips, for the most part, are mandatory visits to museums or a certain exhibition. When I didn't have a professional education in this field yet, I had a list of paintings that I definitely need to see in the original.

Once in the Louvre, I was surprised by the fact that crowds of spectators are standing at the Mona Lisa, but no one pays attention to another brilliant painting by Leonardo and it seems to me that it was at this moment that I decided to go to study art history.📜

- Can we say that modern art influences the fashion world? And how significant is this influence, in your opinion?

- If we look at it globally, I would say that classical art has more influence on fashion, but nevertheless, modern art also has an influence. And we are seeing now that a huge number of artists are collaborating with fashion houses

- How important is the degree of participation of the artist in collaborations with the fashion house? For example, Saint Laurent independently used the work of the Dutch abstract artist Mondrian to implement his creative ideas.💭

- It cannot be said that Saint Laurent and Mondrian are a collaboration, because the former independently, without the participation of the artist, used the work to implement his idea. This is such a reflection, a creative act using "Composition with red, yellow and blue". If we recall the famous union of Elsa Schiaparelli and Salvador Dali, who specially drew a lobster for her evening dress made of organza, or the artist suggested to the designer bags-phones, hats-shoes, then here we are talking about "collaboration".

- Can a fashion collection be an art statement?

- Absolutely!!! It is enough to recall the brilliant works and shows of Alexander McQueen. He managed to fit a whole theatrical performance with allusions, metaphors and deep meaning into the show. Or the legendary Lee Bowery, whose works, by the way, were quoted by Rick Owens and Alexander McQueen.💫

- What is the benefit of cooperation between artists and designers? How are they really useful to each other?

- In business, the benefit is always the same-it's money. Artists need to show their work to a wider public, and fashion houses position themselves that they are not just about clothes. This is such an information guide: to attract brand customers to the art and show a new artist. Designers thus increase the value of their product, try to give a more significant status, formally equating it to the category of high culture.🌌

- Agnese, how did you decide to become a designer? Your website says that this happened after six months spent in Paris. What impressed you so much in Paris that you made such a decision?🇫🇷

- Yes, I was very inspired by the time I spent in Paris. While living there, I realized that I wanted to connect my life with the creative sphere, to be closer to art and everything beautiful. I decided to change my field of study from economics /commercial diplomacy to art and after returning to Riga I started studying interior design.🛋️

- You are leading projects in Riga and Stockholm. Do the requirements of customers from different countries differ?

- I think that the requirements of clients are influenced not so much by nationality as by the level of quality of life, education, lifestyle and the environment.😌

- When a new client comes, does he already have an idea of what exactly he wants, or is he waiting for the initiative and fresh ideas from the designer?

- Most often, the client already has an idea and vision of what he likes and what kind of atmosphere he wants to see, but he does not have enough free time or knowledge for this.

- Do you prefer to use paintings, photographs or posters in the interior design? And why?

- I use paintings with pleasure. Posters and prints, in my opinion, are more like decorations that do not have a special emotional value, but they are useful in order to create an atmosphere by simple means.

- Does it happen that the customer already has a collection of paintings that you need to fit into the interior? And how is the work being built in this case?🖼️

- Yes, it happens that a client has a couple of works of art that need to be included in a new interior. This is an interesting process, because it allows you to prioritize art and organize work around it.

- In your opinion, why do you need art in a modern house? What does it give? What are the purposes of its use?

- The purpose and motive of using art are individual for everyone. Someone is looking for a visually decorative addition to the interior, someone reflects their individuality with the help of art, for someone art can even be a confirmation of status or individuality. It depends on a person's personality, interests, education, various social and economic factors that shape our tastes and dictate our choice. Of course, these decisions are also influenced by trends and world events. This is a question that can be discussed for a long time, but my personal opinion is that art should be chosen on the basis of emotions and intuition, because this is also the main purpose of using art - to stimulate emotions, convey a message, leave a trace in the viewer's mind. I see the use of art in a modern home as a beautiful part of the story, often as a final part or an exciting starting point.🧐

- What advice could you give for those who want to fit works of modern art into an existing interior?

- I would recommend visiting art galleries and exhibitions to understand your taste and feel what kind of art direction you would like to see in your home. Currently, virtual art exhibitions are very common, this is a great opportunity to get inspired and expand your horizons. The most important advice is to show courage and trust your intuition.✨

- What is modern art for you?

- Modern fine art is the art that is being created today, here, in the global 21st century! And it is created by living artists, who are one of the most sensitive parts of this cultural environment.🎨

- What do you think, Baiba, why our contemporaries are not always able to recognize modern art?

- I think everyone is tired of technology and screens today. Visual perception is oversaturated. Direct and superficial participation in any banal event with one touch on a mobile phone creates a situation similar to a trance in a person. The British scientist Kirby calls the result of the superficiality of the media ""silent autism"", which replaces the neurosis of modernism and the narcissism of postmodernism. 👨‍💻

In addition, modern art often does not have a certain framework. It can be conceptual. Conceptualism, in my opinion, requires long descriptions and explanations that people like who perceive everything with their minds. The mind works well. Sometimes text or a white canvas is enough.⬜

For me personally, as a kinesthetic, these works of art cannot reach deeper strings. I need to feel the traces left by the process in a material, primordial, living touch, an authentic experience of the soul that goes beyond words, connecting with deeper spiritual realities. In such works of art, you can travel endlessly, drown and discover something new every time. They carry living energy.

That's why I choose to draw in the modern era and feel how interesting the viewer likes the works. How differently everyone sees and interprets them, revealing the joint experience and creative spirit.✨

Iveta Bigele is professionally engaged in interior design of public, commercial and residential premises. Having extensive experience, Iveta agreed to share with us her thoughts on how to properly design your home and work space, how to fit a work of art into your design, and whether you need to invite a designer for interior design at all, or you can handle all this yourself.✨

- Iveta, you are engaged in interior design of public, commercial and residential premises. What projects are more interesting for you to work on? And why❔

-At the moment, it is more interesting for me to work on the interior of residential premises. For most of my career, I have worked with commercial objects, and they most often already have a ready-made concept that I needed to correctly apply in this room. Now, due to the pandemic, the implementation of most commercial projects has been suspended, so I changed the direction of my work to the design of residential premises. Private projects are interesting for their diversity in the first place: you can try yourself in different styles. So far, everything has been going well for me and my customers have trusted me: I was creating, and they corrected my fantasies a little.

-You call yourself a pragmatic designer. 🧐Tell us more about your concept? What is the most important thing for you in interior design?🛋

- Yes, I am a pragmatist, or at least I try to be one. After all, the interior is not a picture in a glossy magazine, it is the convenience and comfort of its inhabitants. Undoubtedly, it should be stylish and reflect the character, taste, status and preferences of its owners, but, first of all, it should be thoughtful, ergonomic, functional and practical. Ideally, the interior should be bold, fascinating, intriguing, but all this is just an image, the most important thing is the content!

- Please name the most common mistakes that people who design their own house make.❌

-The most common mistake is not to take a designer❕ It seems that you can save money on this, but it is not so. And here it's not even so much a matter of the result, as in the process! How many families get divorced during the renovation! This is one of the most conflicted periods in life. Repair is a very energy-consuming process, which often drags on for several months and does not cancel the main work and worries.🛠

-What would you advise to those who equip a small apartment and want to use the space as efficiently as possible? Are there any secrets here?🤫

- One piece of advice-hire a designer! But seriously, it is important to put the interior not from ready-made, purchased furniture, but to make a built-in, custom-made. Let it be made of laminate, but built-in, because in a small apartment every centimeter counts. The chances that you will find furniture in the size of the niche is negligible, and a gap of 10-15 centimeters is an unused useful area!⬜

It is also advisable to use transformer furniture in a small room, but it is often quite expensive and more relevant in cities where the cost of housing is exorbitant, and a person cannot buy a large apartment, but is quite able to buy expensive furniture. I also recommend not to clutter the room, less details, more benefits.

-What role do works of art play in interior design?🖼

- A work of art is a reflection of the history of the genus, or its current status. From time immemorial, art objects have been a sign of a person's culture and wealth. If a person can afford to decorate the interior not with a reproduction or a fake, but with a real creation of the master, this should be done.

Edmund Lucis (1959 – 2017) is one of the most famous contemporary Latvian artists. Lucis was born in Riga, and after studying at the Latvian Academy of Arts, he took up painting, installations, performances and video art. Member of the Union of Artists of Latvia since 1996. He participated in many exhibitions in his homeland, as well as in exhibitions in Paris, Munich, Lucerne, Beijing, Hamburg and Moscow. His works have been selected for the St. Petersburg Graphic Triennale, the Venice Biennale, the Bilbao Video Art Festival and the Beijing Olympic Art Biennale 😎

Where are the objects of world art stored❓

Around the pandemic, lockdowns, restrictions, etc. Museums are closed, galleries are closed, exhibitions are prohibited.⛔ But what about the lovers of beauty in such a situation? Can the latest technological advances help artists and collectors to show their works of art to a wide audience, and art lovers to see it? And where, in general, are works of art stored in the modern world?

Do you know about the existence of freeports? It turns out that today it is very fashionable and profitable to store your works of art in the so-called freeports. These are large specialized storage facilities equipped with the latest technology, located in free trade zones, that is, in offshore countries: Switzerland, Luxembourg, Monaco, Singapore, the United States (Delaware). In the Geneva freeport, which is located on 3,5 thousand square meters, for example, various works of art are stored for a total of about 100 mlr. dollars.

The same situation is in the largest American freeport (Delaware), whose clients are well-known collectors, investors, art galleries, artists, museums, etc. They all pay to have their works preserved, in a place that has specialized equipment, like in the best museums in the world, for storing works of art. It guarantees both physical and cyber security and an appropriate microclimate - 21 degrees Celsius🌡️ and a relative humidity of 50%. Delaware has all the conditions not only for storing art objects, but also for viewing and selling them, since freeport is located in a special federal foreign trade zone and there is no sales tax. If the client wants to admire their works of art, then for this purpose they will be invited to a special air-conditioned room, where their works will be delivered to them, extracted from the storage using special barcodes.
🏦In the modern world, freeports have become a kind of Swiss banks for storing works of art. Here you can not only avoid paying taxes, but also avoid unwanted attention. It turns out that the works of art today are hidden behind seven seals in special vaults, and they are not exposed to the audience and fans at exhibitions and in museums.

And is there any opportunity in the modern world for people to see works of art that are in private ownership❓ Yes, there are. Today, there is a digital platform where any collector can put their collection on display around the world. This is the Collecteurs platform, created by the Oralkan couple from New York. This project was conceived specifically to allow collectors to share their works of art with the whole world, so that the works work, and not remain hidden in warehouses. The Aralkans believe that the idea of any work is to be seen, while in most cases, a painting from the artist's studio is immediately sent to the repository, without making contact with any viewer.

What are the difficulties in choosing a picture?🖼️

The thing is that this process is multifaceted and you have to take into account several aspects that work together – is a style of painting, and the style of the apartment, and the scale of the paintings and the area of the wall and the colours of the painting and the color of the Wallpaper, and the play of light and shadow - lighting, etc.

✅First of all, as said by the artists, a man must first love the painting. It should evoke in you the emotions that you would like to experience every time you look at this work of art.
Of course, if you want to invest in a work of art, then experts from the gallery will help you with this. But if the mood in your home is just important to you, then you can approach the choice based on your feelings. If you like the picture, it means that it is yours.

✅Choose a space. We look at the purpose of the room: living room, bedroom, office, kitchen, hallway. Based on the purpose of the room, the content of the works may vary. In the living room and kitchen, it can be large, bright canvases, and in the bedroom, you need soothing works.

✅As for the size of the picture, you need to take into account the area of free space and the ratio of the picture to this space. By the way, here you can use the gallery service – "picture for fitting". And if it hangs over a sofa or desk, then hang the picture so that you would be comfortable looking at it while sitting.

✅Harmony with all other objects. Try to make your art object fit into the overall interior decoration. The style of the painting should be in harmony with the style of the room. For example, if the apartment is decorated in a modern style, then ultra-modern art objects will suit this interior. And if your interior is classic, then the work of art should have a traditional character. Although, in our time, it is possible to combine the incongruous, but this should be done with a sense of a certain harmony.

In any case, everyone has the right to express themselves through their favorite works of art and put the picture wherever they want. Play with your personal space, create your own world💫

«Hedonist» sculpture, author: Arne-Johan Ruan.

💡 Hedonism is the teaching that pleasure is the highest good and the meaning of life, the only value (while all other values are tools for achieving pleasure). The doctrine was formed in antiquity, but at different periods of human history it became fashionable in different societies-from France in the time of Louis XIV to the consumer societies of the modern West. Hedonism makes pleasure absolute, but even unrestrained pleasure has its price. Often, it becomes the object of research by the methods of art.

The sculpture of Arne-Johan Ruan "Hedonist", presented in our gallery, is just an example of how the artist tries to reflect the very spirit of the concept of "hedonism" with the expressive means available to him. The iron sculpture depicts a person disproportionately stretched, as if infinitely reaching for something. To what❓, of course, - to pleasure. The sculpture is made of iron, which is quite symbolic, because it is associated with scientific and technological progress, which has become the main source of the modern cult of pleasure. Here is how the author characterizes the sculpture: "Inspired by people I know, whose life is dedicated to the search for pleasure and self-satisfaction.»

A brief history of Authenticity in Art 📜

It would seem that modern technologies and the knowledge of art historians allow you to accurately attribute the work. As a result, the picture is attributed, for example, to the work of the young Michelangelo, or it is doubted that it was painted by Leonardo himself. However, the categories of authenticity and originality of art become the subject of aesthetic and philosophical reflections. After the nameless artists of the Middle Ages, who were considered tools in the hands of God, there were bright masters of the anthropocentric Renaissance, and then the Romantics, who believed in talent and beauty.

Most researchers believe that the concept of authenticity in its current form has developed in Modern times. It developed simultaneously with the formation of the modern world and is actually the brainchild of Romanticism (XVIII century). Against the background of the desire to rationalize and classify the world through the all-comprehending mind, the museum becomes part of the European strategies of knowledge. A new figure appears in the culture of a competent critic, who has the education and the right to make judgments about the works of someone else's creativity. In the XVIII–XIX centuries, there is a romantic idea of art as a product of artistic genius, acting as a guarantor of authenticity. If earlier works that glorified the Lord were considered beautiful, then for the supporters of "pure art" the subject of worship is creativity as such.

Over time, the old concepts of uniqueness and authorship are reinterpreted following the re-evaluation of the very essence of art. Printing opened the "Gutenberg galaxy", and the products created on the machine were replaced by manuscripts with miniatures made by hand in the scriptoriums of monasteries. The history of mass copies begins with the Renaissance, when the art of engraving and printmaking began to develop. Over time, photography made it possible to create high-quality reproductions, print technology-to distribute them in huge quantities, and with the advent of digital formats, there was no need for a physical medium at all 💻

It is not surprising that in the industrial and information societies, the problem of authenticity has become one of the key issues in art criticism and philosophical aesthetics. Back in the 1930s, Walter Benjamin raised the question of the nature of a work of art in an era of technological reproducibility. He noticed that the mechanically created art does not fit into the previous concept of the original. If a hand-made reproduction can be called a fake, then a technical copy eliminates the "authority of authenticity". The reproduced work of art is increasingly becoming a reproduction of a work designed for reproducibility 🤯

In the 1980s, Rosalind Krauss asked the question: "What happens if the work of art embodies the discourse of reproduction without the original?» Today, this project has come true thanks to the media art. Reproducibility has reached its limit in digital art, whether it is in the virtual galleries of museums or in net art that is created and exists on the web. Authenticity in this connection becomes a fluid category, turning out not to be a fact, but a kind of spectrum. According to art critic Boris Groys, it "has not just disappeared, but has learned to vary."

It seemed that total replicability abolished the concept of authenticity, and digital art finished it off completely. The accessibility of works of art, their proximity to the reader/viewer/listener, led to alienation: having the opportunity to look at any pictures, a person was fed up. However, in 2021, the public was stirred by the news of the emergence of a new type of rights to works of art based on blockchain technology. NFT (Non-exchangeable tokens) are unique digital certificates associated with a specific object. The technology is based on the Ethereum platform ("Ethereum"), the exchange units of which are called ethers. Each of them is specific. If ordinary blockchain tokens are identical, then non ‒ interchangeable ones are authentic. They can also be linked to real-world objects, but those that mark fully digital works have become particularly popular.

💡 It turns out that even in the era of universal reproducibility, originality is valued: tokenization reflects an urgent need in digital art ‒ the desire to regain the lost uniqueness. Thus, we can already say that we live at the very beginning of the Renaissance of authenticity!
