After the private sector started bitumen production from 1998 to 2005, exports continuously increased. Iran’s bitumen exports gradually increased to 1 million tons throughout these years, and reached over 3 million tons . 80 countries currently demand bitumen.
In order to compete with larger companies on price, small producers have degraded bitumen quality before export by mixing the main bitumen with products such as mineral bitumen, sulfur, and others. This resulted in countries such as China, Malaysia, African countries and others, who were once Iran’s main consumers, restricting their imports from Iran or conditioned it on stringent tests and sampling.
Since branding in Iran associates the product with Iran instead of the producer, the country’s export market was seriously harmed and brought about conditions in which importers were unwelcoming of the bitumen from the largest and oldest producers, and concluded that Iran’s bitumen lacked quality, which tainted the Iranian brand.

Bitumen emulsion is a two-phase mixture of bitumen and water made using emulsion material. In this mixture, bitumen does not dissolve in water but rather is suspended in very small globules. In some cases, a stabilizer could be used in addition to the emulsifier. Bitumen color before use is brown, and turns black after curing and water evaporation.
Bitumen Emulsion Types
Bitumen emulsion can be categorized according to setting speed and electrical charge of suspended particles:
A) classifying bitumen emulsions in terms of demulsification speed
After using the bitumen emulsion on the intended surface, the water present in the mixture separates and evaporates and the bitumen gradually coats the road surface and around the aggregates, which is known as demulsification. Bitumen emulsion are divided into three main groups in terms of stability, namely rapid-setting (unstable), medium-setting (semi-stable), and slow-setting (unstable), each with various subcategories.

Research conducted in the United States has shown that the passage of one vehicle every day on gravel roads creates 560 kg (per km) of dust every year. Accidents on such roads are also twice as often as paved roads. Due to the lack of financing for such roads, other methods are considered for dust palliation and traffic in bad weather conditions. Using bitumen emulsion is a practical and economical solution to this problem. Diluted bitumen emulsion is poured directly on the gravel road surface, a method also known as dust palliation or control.
Dust palliative CSS-1 or CSS-1h bitumen emulsion is mixed with water at a volumetric ratio of at least 1 to 5, and sprayed on the road surface at a rate of 0.45 to 2.25 l/m2. The amount of diluted mixture depends on surface conditions, since a minor permeation of bitumen in the road is necessary. Road surfaces that are permeable or have relatively large empty spaces will require more bitumen emulsion. Diluted bitumen emulsion is sprayed using the same method usually used for spreading bitumen solutions with the bituminous distributor

South Korea, Singapore, Iran, Canada and Spain are respectively the world's largest bitumen exporters.

Total global bitumen imports amounts to 24 million tons, and China, the United States, India, France and Indonesia are among the biggest bitumen importers. Iran produces 5 million tons of bitumen and exports 3.5 million tons annually as the fourth producer and third exporter in the world, and enjoys special status in the global market. In total, South Korea with a 15% share, Singapore with a 12% share, and Iran with an 11% share of the global bitumen export market are the biggest players of the global bitumen trade.

Studies and projections regarding the future global economy suggest that Asian countries will experience the biggest GDP growth until 2050, and the top 5 economies in the world in 2050 are predicted to include four Asian countries. Accordingly, with an annual bitumen consumption of 27 million tons in 2015, China was the biggest bitumen consumer in the world and supplies 4.7 million tons, and amounts to 17.2% of its total consumption, through imports. China’s economic development plans defines very large infrastructural projects, especially highways and local access roads that are expected to raise this country’s bitumen consumption over the next five years to over 30 million tons a year.

Emulsion is defined as a heterogeneous system with at least one binding liquid and a second liquid spread in very small droplets that are often 1 to 10 µm in diameter. These systems have little stability and will settle with more stability by adding activators.
The dispersed liquid is the dispersed or internal phase, and the immersion liquid is the external phase.
Emulsifiers are materials that slow chemical reactions and stabilize the emulsion. They are widely used in the foodstuffs and industry, and are a large group of various mixtures with particular applications.
Adding emulsifier to two liquids that do not mix naturally decreases the surface tension between them and prevents phasing, resulting in the emulsion.
Emulsifiers are classified as anionic and nonionic, and their ionization potential depends on the electrochemical changes of the liquid phase. In ionic emulsions, the hydrophilic end is nonionic and is water-soluble without ionization.

20/03/2021

The biggest risk in working with bitumen is possible skin contact with hot bitumen. In the long period of time of using bitumen, there have been no reports of bitumen’s danger to the skin. Bitumen solutions and emulsions are more likely to touch the skin due to lower distribution temperature, which should be avoided. When bitumen solutions contact the skin, their solvents can enter the body through the skin. The presence of solvent in the body has carcinogenic effects. Contact with bitumen emulsions agitates the skin and the eyes and causes allergies in different people.
First Aid: In case of burn, the area should be quickly cooled and held under cold water for 10 minutes. The eyes should be held in cold water for 5 minutes. In all cases, refrain from cooling the person's body and peeling the bitumen from the skin.
Medical Care: Bitumen adheres strongly to the skin and should only be separated in a well-equipped clinic. Cold bitumen creates a sterile and hydrophobic layer on the burnt area and prevents drying. Removing bitumen damages the skin and may dry and cause infection in second-degree burns. In second-degree burns, the bitumen layer should remain in place and covered with paraffin ointments such as Flamazine (Silver Sulfadizine). This method softens the bitumen layer, which can be separated after one day. In this case, the skin does not change and regenerates. In case of third-degree burns, the bitumen should be removed through surgery based on depth and location. In this state, it is better to remove the bitumen in the operating room 5 days after the burn. This conditions will not cause any infections.
If the burn causes incidental bleeding, the bitumen acts as a bandage after cooling and prevents bleeding. In this case, the cold bitumen should be softened and then separated to avoid blocking the blood flow. If the hot bitumen touches the eye, only a specialist doctor can diagnose the patient’s condition and make the necessary prescription.
