What do you need to be successful at something new?

Every knitting project for me is a new beginning, an exciting adventure of creating a new garment. Sometimes I feel confident, sometimes not. Sometimes mistakes feed my curiosity and become part of the process, sometimes they irritate me because of bringing me a couple steps back from the goal. Overall when I start something new, be it a knitting project, a job or a friendship these are the things that I practice:

🧶 Explorer mindset - curiosity and openness to experience, whatever it is I'm doing for the first time it has something I can discover, learn and try without the big expectations of extraordinary performance.

🧶 Guidance - there are very few things I cannot do with proper guidance. There is always someone who already did whatever I'm about to begin. And they usually are happy to help.

🧶 Perseverance - if you really want something, but it is not working out right away, try more, and usually it will surrender to your persistence.

Storytelling to oneself. This is the process I discovered quite recently and it helps me in so many situations.

How often do you tell yourself that you will succeed with something new? Or that you have what it takes? Sometimes that's just what you need to get started and later get to the finish line - belief in yourself.

But the trust does not come from the air - you need to collect experiences of success and encouragement to make the call believable.

So thinking about it I've put together a blog post (yes, the first blog post!) about the little things that help to succeed with the first (and any) knitting project. Hope it will add something to your encouragement list.

What stops you from casting on?

There are times when we want something, dream about it, and take no action, hoping the circumstances change in our favor. I get into this place every now and then, however, in recent years I've started asking myself "So what will happen if I fail?" Because this is my biggest trouble maker though - fear of not succeeding. It may be something else that holds you back from casting on your knitting project or anything else: maybe the time it will take, lack of knowledge, money, or courage?

When I explore my fear of failure it usually deflates like a balloon. Once I inspect it I see it all depends on what I call a success: a fun afternoon trying something new? making myself a small item that I don't need to show anyone? meditating with a repetitive knit just to practice the new stitch type? All of these are great success definitions, that can be achieved without knowledge, hours of time, or even much money, and are almost impossible to fail. How can you fail to have fun, huh?

As long as we can be moderate with expectations for ourselves in the very beginning, our confidence will grow in the process, and what has started as a lovely coffee break with a tiny knit, may turn you into your own sweater maker.

So again, what stops you from casting on? Do you still believe the reason?

Maybe it is time I share a little about my knitting story. I've been kntting on and off all my life. Mostly small projects for myself and gifts like pencil holders, scarfs, wrist warms and socks. Sweaters seemed like unachievale mountains of knitting mastery that require the patience I didn't have.

And then the pandemic came and I said, well let's see maybe I'm patient enought now to make a sweater. I tried to find some instructions how to make one, mostly googling free patterns and picked one - purely based on the photo and idea that it will only be stockinet stitch. The knitting suprisingly went quite fast, even though I abandoned the pattern soon as it did not make sense after some time (I sure made all the mistakes to avoid, I'll share about them later) and I ended up with 2-3 sizes too big huge sweater that I later donated to Ukraine people. Anyway, even though I did not ware it much I was hooked.

When I started hunting for my new project I discovered the IG community of knitters and wonderful designers that you won't find on free pattern google results. Once I bougth my very first quality pattern my knitting just reached completely new level - where I actually felt capable of knitting beautiful and stylish sweaters.

So that's that - my story of turning into a person who can produce knitwear that inspires people around me. I believe anyone can feel this good and successful after finishing their projects. That's why I'm here sharing my knitting bits, ideas from the process and patterns with you.

How did you get into the knitting world?
