Did you know? About 7% of Sri Lanka’s 275,046 marine fisheries workers are women.

The fishing industry in Sri Lanka is often perceived as a male-dominated sector; however, women play numerous essential yet often overlooked roles at various levels of small-scale fisheries. From post-harvest processing and drying to marketing, women sustain coastal livelihoods and communities, despite their contributions remaining largely invisible.

Our StoryMap: Mapping Narratives of Sri Lankan Fisherwomen seeks to highlight the diverse roles of women across the Sri Lankan coastline, explore the support structures that enable their participation, and shed light on the ways they contribute to fisheries in a male-dominated society.

Their invaluable contributions keep Sri Lanka’s fisheries alive, even when their work goes unseen.

Saying goodbye to Buddy, the dog who adopted me and the girls, has been heartbreaking. He was loving, joyful, and always protective, and I’m grateful he experienced care and love every day.

You can honour Buddy’s memory by supporting and , along with the amazing local vet, in Ahangama, who helps dogs in need. They run sterilization programs with vaccinations and focus on helping local people and stray dogs in Sri Lanka. They also have some awesome T-shirts and tote bags to support their work.

A reminder to all dog owners: distemper is serious—keep your dogs vaccinated and updated annually.

Some videos in this post may be upsetting. I hope they aren’t disturbing, as I want to show what can happen with distemper so others can protect their dogs.

The 8 R’s of a 🤘🏼It’s amazing how much waste you can avoid by following this cycle 💪🏼

We need to start asking more questions like:

“Do I really need this?” 🤔

“Can I buy this second hand?” 🤔

“Is there a reusable version of this item that will save me money?” 🤔

“Can I fix this instead of throwing it away?” 🤔

“Could someone else make better use of this?” 🤔

“Can I turn this item into something else that’s useful?”

“Is this material recyclable?”🤔

If we start asking ourselves these questions then we are much less likely to contribute to a throw away culture and we will essentially end up wasting less! 💅🏼 .
