South Korea's record-breaking heat wave intensified on Friday after temperatures climbed to 106.5°F (41.4°C) in the southeastern city of Yangsan, setting a new local all-time high, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.

The reading is the highest temperature ever recorded among the KMA's 97 official weather stations, surpassing the previous record of 105.8°F (41.0°C) set in 2018. It also marks the third consecutive day Yangsan has exceeded 104°F (40°C), a rare occurrence since nationwide weather observations began in 1973.

The temperature came just shy of South Korea's overall national record of 107.4°F (41.9°C), also recorded in 2018.
