Fugue is a project on which two pairs of photographers and designers collaborate annually to produce two outcomes under one theme. The theme of this issue is the New Order.
Fugue no.2 - A to Z Categorize by iPhone, Seulgi Choi, Sujin Lee
A to Z Categorize by iPhone is a compilation of digital images recognized by the machine learning technique in Apple iPhones, listed here in alphabetical order.
iPhones group all images taken with the devices into different categories. The mechanism of this categorization depends on the recognition technique embedded in the phones. Even though the accuracy and details of the technique has improved, photos are still misclassified when the formal structure or color of the captured images are similar, or the images share regional or cultural characteristics.
By testing the limits of the image recognition technique, (one of the most important parts in AI technologies,) it is shown how digital images are interpreted and categorized in a contemporary frame.
푸가(Fugue)는 일 년에 한 번, 두 명의 사진가와 두 명의 디자이너가 짝을 이루어 하나의 주제 아래 두 개의 결과물을 만들어내는 프로젝트입니다. 이번 호 주제는 ‘New Order’입니다.

A to Z Categorize by iPhone은 아이폰의 기계 학습 기술로 인식된 디지털 이미지를 알파벳 순으로 정리한 작업이다.
애플 아이폰은 기기에서 촬영된 모든 사진을 여러가지 범주로 그룹화 한다. 이러한 범주의 메커니즘은 아이폰에 내장된 인식 시스템에 달려 있다. 기술이 발전함에 따라 이미지 인식은 높은 정확도와 범주의 세밀함을 나타내지만 촬영된 피사체의 구도, 모양, 그리고 색이 유사하거나, 지역적, 문화적 특색이 있는 피사체일 경우 잘못 인식하는 오류를 보인다.
우리는 AI 기술의 중요한 부분중 하나인 이미지 인식과 분류의 한계를 테스트함으로써 디지털 이미지가 현대적인 프레임에서 어떻게 해석되고 분류되는지를 보여주고자 한다.
