Hansan Mosi is a high quality ramie linen-fabric produced in the Hansan area of Seocheon-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, South Korea. Due to the Hansan Mosi’s breathable fabric, people enjoy wearing the clothes made of ramie during the summer. Hansan is the name of the area, and it is a city where most of the households own a loom since the olden days. The Hansan Mosi was woven more delicately than the other local ramie fabrics. There is a common saying in the Hansan area: “one roll of Mosi in a bowl of rice” which means it is very delicate and thinly woven enough to be fit into a bowl. Hansan Mosi was listed in 2011 as one of the UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Master Bang Yeon-Ok was born and raised in the Hansan area. She began working on Mosi at the age of 10. In the mid-1980’s, she was certified to make Hansan Mosi such as splitting ramie plants, weaving fabrics, and making clothes using ramie. In 2000, she become a National Intangible Cultural Heritage of South Korea. The handmade products are well-known to be of top quality woven Mosi not to be duplicated by any other Mosi materials in the world. This Hansan Mosi was made by the National Intangible Cultural property that is master Bang Yeon-Ok through a long production process. The master harvests the ramie plants, moistens the surface with the peeled stem of ramie and repeats it by drying it under the sun. Then she splits the peeled stem of Mosi as thin as less than 0.1mm with her teeth to make a bundle to weave. The thinner it is, the better the quality of the ramie fabric. This work is very hard and takes a long time. After that, she wraps the linen thread on the traditional loom and weave the linen clothes. 1 pill (one roll) is 36cm wide and 21.6 meters long, and the master produces about 10 pills within in a year.
