Lies you’re told in the gym – protein is the most important nutrient when you’re getting fit.
It’s not all about protein, folks, you need a full range of macro-, micronutrients and water.
– Without enough carbohydrate in the diet, the body starts to use protein as fuel after exercise - so less protein for recovery
– Micronutrients are also key - B vitamins help the body to metabolise the nutrients from food so they can be used for energy while zinc is involved in reconstructing tissue
– Water aids digestion, helps regulate body temperature and circulation, transports nutrients and oxygen to cells and removes waste products. If you lose too much fluid in exercise it can seriously impair performance.
Protein plays a massive part in exercise yes, there’s more to exercise than muscle and without proper nutrition, protein is prevented from doing its job in the first place.
